Bulgarian to Czech: recover case roles and distinguish the future from the present

Czech needs noun relationships that Bulgarian spells differently

Bulgarian ordinary nouns do not have a general case declension, while Czech retains seven cases. A Bulgarian phrase with a preposition therefore cannot be translated by placing the Czech dictionary form after a roughly corresponding preposition. The Czech noun and any agreeing adjective must take the form required by the actual construction.

Bulgarian pronouns still distinguish case, and its object clitics can help identify a recipient or an affected participant. Use those source clues to interpret a sentence before choosing Czech endings. When a Bulgarian clitic and a full noun refer to the same participant, the target must preserve that single relationship rather than introduce a second person merely to account for both source expressions.

The Czech verb may look present while referring to later

Both languages distinguish perfective and imperfective aspect, but their future constructions cannot be aligned word for word. Bulgarian has the future particle ще. Czech can use a perfective verb in a formally present-shaped conjugation to refer to a future event. The absence of a separate Czech future auxiliary is therefore not enough to diagnose a lost future.

The Czech Universal Dependencies description contrasts jdu domů, I am going home, with přijdu domů, I will come home, and půjdu domů, I will go home. These examples also distinguish going from coming. For a Bulgarian travel update, preserve the direction relative to the speaker or destination, not just the later time: choosing a future form does not by itself preserve the intended movement.

Past agreement reaches beyond the spelling of the pronoun

Czech past participles reflect gender and number. In the plural, masculine animacy also matters for written agreement. The Czech Language Institute illustrates that grammatical category can differ from biological reality, including animal-shaped objects and other nouns classified by their declension. A Bulgarian plural adjective or pronoun is not a complete specification of the Czech agreement ending.

In particular, a Bulgarian sentence about several people and one about several objects can require distinct Czech participial endings even if their source plural verb forms look alike. Identify the Czech subject noun’s grammatical category. Applying a single past-tense plural ending across both translations would discard a distinction that Czech spelling requires.

Ownership and dependent actions deserve separate decisions

Bulgarian distinguishes мой, my, from свой, the subject’s own; Czech similarly distinguishes můj from svůj. This resemblance is useful only after the subject has been identified. In a sentence mentioning two people, preserve whether a possession belongs to the actor or to someone else instead of replacing every possessive with the most familiar first-person form.

Bulgarian also uses finite да constructions where Czech may employ an infinitive. The shorter Czech construction is appropriate only if it retains the intended actor relationship. For instructions containing several people, map each action to its performer before accepting that reduction. The goal is a Czech sentence whose case endings, possessive reference and verb forms all describe the same event as the Bulgarian source.
