Bulgarian to Bosnian: the familiar Slavic sentence needs new noun forms

Recognize the object before choosing its ending

Bulgarian and Bosnian share enough Slavic vocabulary to make a sentence look reassuringly familiar. Their nouns nevertheless do different grammatical work. Bulgarian ordinary nouns lack a general case declension; Bosnian distinguishes noun forms according to their role. A Bulgarian object cannot simply be copied into a Bosnian sentence as a dictionary headword, even when the corresponding noun is easy to recognize.

Columbia University’s teaching table contrasts dobri profesori, good professors as a subject, with dobre profesore as an object. Both the adjective and noun change. When translating a Bulgarian sentence about meeting or recommending professors, inspect the whole Bosnian noun phrase: a correct noun ending beside a subject-form adjective still leaves the relationship grammatically mismatched.

A consonant ending is not a reliable gender label

The same Columbia lesson treats noć, night, and ljubav, love, as feminine nouns ending in a consonant. Their nominative and accusative plurals are noći and ljubavi. These are useful reminders when Bulgarian wording supplies an adjective: its source gender is not an instruction to give the Bosnian word the same agreement pattern.

Bulgarian adjective agreement can make gender visible in the input, but target agreement follows the Bosnian head noun. For example, a sentence about several nights requires the Bosnian plural of night rather than a guessed masculine plural based on its consonant ending. Short calendar descriptions and accommodation messages are particularly likely to expose this mistaken shortcut.

Translate dependent actions, not every occurrence of да

Bulgarian uses finite да constructions instead of an infinitive. Bosnian has infinitives, and Columbia’s beginner material illustrates them after verbs expressing ability and preference. In Možemo gledati filmove, we can watch films, the second action appears as an infinitive. A Bulgarian finite complement can therefore correspond to a Bosnian construction without a separately conjugated second verb.

That difference requires attention to the actors. A source clause describing what someone else should do carries information that an infinitive controlled by the first subject might erase. Determine whether the person able, willing or obliged to act is also the person performing the dependent action. The choice belongs to the complete construction, rather than to an automatic substitution of one short conjunction for another.

Bosnian is a deliberate target choice

Columbia teaches Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian together while marking vocabulary belonging to particular standards. This reflects extensive shared grammar without treating the three written standards as interchangeable. A Bulgarian-to-Bosnian translation should maintain its Bosnian selection throughout a paragraph; a recognizable neighbouring form is not automatically the intended editorial choice.

Ijekavian spelling alone cannot certify that choice. Columbia explicitly notes that standard Serbian also recognizes Ijekavian, even though its course labels favour a simpler teaching distinction. For Bulgarian users, the practical consequence is to judge the target through a consistent combination of spelling, vocabulary and grammar. Changing Cyrillic letters to Latin letters cannot supply the missing Bosnian case forms or decide which standard’s words belong together.
