Bulgarian to Bodo: keep object reference clear and rebuild the written word

A definite Bulgarian noun does not settle Bodo object marking

Bulgarian can attach its definite article to a noun or an agreeing modifier. That gives a translator a useful clue about which participant is already identifiable. It does not supply a mechanical instruction to attach a particular Bodo object marker. In a request about delivering a document, identifying the document and deciding how prominently it figures in the message are related but separate decisions.

Research on Bodo differential object marking describes an interaction between reference and discourse. Human reference, specificity, topic and contrast can matter, depending on the noun phrase and construction. Consequently, a Bulgarian definite object should be translated within its sentence and surrounding exchange. A detached glossary entry cannot reveal whether someone is being contrasted with another person or whether an object is newly introduced.

Follow participants through Bulgarian clitics

Bulgarian permits an object clitic alongside a full noun phrase. When both point to the same person, they should not become two different Bodo participants. Identify the full noun, the short pronoun and their shared role before assessing the output. This is especially useful in messages where a recipient is mentioned by name and then referred to again with a short form.

Likewise, Bulgarian ordinary nouns do not retain a general case declension, although pronouns distinguish case and some nouns have vocatives. Their familiar surface form can conceal different sentence roles. For Bodo translation, establish who acts, who receives something and what is affected; copying Bulgarian noun order alone is an unreliable substitute for that analysis.

Use Bodo vocabulary rather than Cyrillic transferred into another alphabet

The CIIL and NCERT Bodo primer gives आखाइ for hand, सैमा for dog and ओंखाम for cooked rice. These short examples illustrate three separate vocabulary choices a Bulgarian source may require. A reference to a hand needs the body part, a pet notice needs the animal, and a meal description may concern prepared rice rather than an agricultural crop.

The primer presents Bodo in Devanagari. Converting Bulgarian Cyrillic characters into Devanagari-looking spellings would only change the appearance of the source, not produce these Bodo words. For a labelled illustration or a short shopping message, check that the output names the intended thing before using its spelling as a learning aid. Keep the complete word intact when copying it between applications.

Retain the distinctions the short source leaves implicit

Bulgarian can express a future with ще and uses finite да constructions where an English gloss might use an infinitive. In instructions containing several actions, those source forms help distinguish a prediction from an intended or dependent action. They should not disappear merely because the Bodo result uses a different grammatical construction.

A useful review therefore asks two concrete questions: have repeated Bulgarian references remained one participant, and has the Bodo wording preserved the action relationship? If an isolated Bulgarian sentence leaves the object or recipient unclear, include the preceding sentence. That added evidence is more useful than forcing a Bodo marker on every noun that happens to carry a Bulgarian definite article.
