Bulgarian to Armenian: respectful agreement can look similar while noun grammar changes

A familiar-looking polite pattern is only the beginning

Bulgarian Вие can address one person respectfully with plural verb agreement. Eastern Armenian documentation describes a comparable mismatch between singular respectful reference and second-person plural verbs with Դուք. This is a useful correspondence, but it should not be mistaken for proof that every Bulgarian plural phrase refers to one person. Both the participant count and the address relationship must be established from the source.

The Armenian documentation distinguishes the formal capitalized Դուք from familiar singular դու and plural դուք. A Bulgarian customer enquiry can therefore require attention to spelling as well as the predicate. If the source addresses several customers rather than one respectfully, the target should not acquire a singular interpretation merely because the translator recognizes a polite pronoun pattern.

Bulgarian adjective agreement is not an Armenian requirement

Bulgarian polite constructions can contain gender information: the Academy recommends Вие заета ли сте when addressing one woman, while its discussion gives plural l-participle agreement in Вие сте казали. The different endings need to be interpreted within Bulgarian grammar before translation. They do not imply that a conversation has changed from one addressee to several.

Eastern Armenian lacks the Bulgarian grammatical gender system. Its target description does not need to reproduce each masculine or feminine agreement ending. Preserve any explicitly stated identity or relationship, but distinguish that content from the source’s obligatory agreement. A gender-neutral Armenian form can correctly refer to the same woman without encoding the Bulgarian adjective’s feminine ending.

Restore the noun relationships that Bulgarian expresses separately

Bulgarian largely lacks noun case declension. Eastern Armenian instead distinguishes cases within its nominal system, so the source’s prepositional relationships often require target case decisions. Identify whether a phrase concerns a recipient, source, instrument or location before evaluating the Armenian noun form. The spelling of the Bulgarian noun alone does not establish the target ending.

The Armenian grammar illustrates մոտենում էր քաղաքին, an approach toward the city, with the city phrase in a dative construction. For a Bulgarian movement description, this demonstrates why the target relationship must be built with the chosen Armenian predicate. It would be unsafe to assign one Armenian form mechanically to every Bulgarian occurrence of a particular preposition, regardless of the action described.

A negative clause may concentrate information in its verb

Bulgarian uses the separate negative particle не in ordinary verbal negation. The Eastern Armenian documentation identifies bound չ- as a negative element on verbal forms. A translated denial can therefore distribute the same information across fewer visible words. Counting tokens is not a reliable way to check that the negative meaning survived.

The Armenian construction also matters when the Bulgarian sentence combines respectful address with a denial or correction. Establish the addressee first, then determine which proposition is negated and how the target predicate encodes it. The shared possibility of polite plural agreement helps with one part of the sentence, while Armenian case marking, lack of grammatical gender and bound negation still require independent reconstruction.
