Bosnian to Vietnamese: distinguish a negative result from a result not reached yet

Not yet adds a temporal expectation

Bosnian can distinguish an ordinary negative statement from one meaning that something has not happened yet. Vietnamese also makes this distinction, but a small independent word can carry the temporal relationship that a Bosnian reader might focus on elsewhere in the source clause.

The NIU lesson contrasts tôi chưa hiểu, I do not understand yet, with affirmative patterns containing rồi. Its explanation places chưa before the verb in a statement and rồi at the end. These are meaningful positions, not interchangeable slots for translating any Bosnian temporal expression.

If a Bosnian source says that the writer has not yet understood an explanation, the target should retain the not-yet reading. A plain negative can lose the sense that understanding remains a relevant possible development. Conversely, adding chưa to a source that simply denies something can introduce a temporal implication the writer did not intend.

The source’s tense and aspect help establish the event’s temporal setting, but neither should be collapsed into a single Vietnamese marker. A Bosnian negative past report, an unfinished present state and a request for later completion can involve the same lexical activity while making different claims.

A completion question requires a matching kind of reply

The lesson builds questions ending in chưa and illustrates affirmative replies with rồi and negative replies with chưa. This is different from asking only whether a person possesses something using có ... không. The question’s construction determines what kind of distinction the answer addresses.

A Bosnian source asking whether a task is finished yet should not become a bare question about whether the task exists. Likewise, a question about present possession should not automatically imply that acquisition was expected by now. Preserve the source’s focus on existence, ownership or attainment.

In a short translated exchange, an isolated negative answer can be especially misleading if the preceding question has been changed. The reader may understand no result yet where the writer intended a categorical denial, or the reverse. Translate the question-answer relationship together rather than assigning every negative source answer the same Vietnamese word.

Counting an item can require a classifier

NIU illustrates có hai cái bàn, having two tables, and có ba quyển từ điển, having three dictionaries, in its classifier discussion. The classifier accompanies the counted item. It is not another object added to the source inventory.

Bosnian can distribute number and case information across a numeral and noun phrase. Vietnamese can instead include an additional classifier alongside the numeral and lexical noun. A longer target phrase can therefore preserve the same quantity without claiming that extra items are present.

The lesson also allows a classifier to stand without its lexical noun when the referent is clear. A Bosnian reader should not automatically treat that shorter target as an omitted object. The preceding exchange may already establish which item is being counted.

These two contrasts interact in availability messages. A Bosnian source may ask whether the required number of items has arrived yet; the Vietnamese target must preserve both the count and the attainment question. Correct vocabulary for the items is insufficient if the classifier construction changes what is counted or the negative marker changes not yet into an unrestricted denial.
