Bosnian to Ukrainian: preserve address, quantity and the meaning of a reflexive

Calling someone is different from mentioning them

Bosnian and Ukrainian both distinguish direct address through vocative forms. That shared category helps identify what a source phrase is doing, but it does not make the two languages’ noun endings interchangeable. The target form must address the same person with the same title or relationship.

Marta Jenkala’s Ukrainian course illustrates Романе! when calling Roman and Шановний пане! in formal address. Bosnian vocatives such as gospodine and doktore similarly signal that a participant is being addressed rather than merely described. Recognising that function is the first step; selecting the Ukrainian noun and ending is a separate one.

In a Bosnian message opening with a title followed by a request, preserve the title’s address function. Turning it into an ordinary nominative phrase can make the target read like a statement about that person rather than an appeal to them.

A vocative should also remain distinct from the actor of the following clause. A message can address one participant while asking them to contact another. The opening title does not automatically make every later personal reference point to the recipient.

An object case can contribute a quantity reading

The Ukrainian course contrasts Випий води, drink some water, with a construction selecting the water in a glass as a whole. The genitive partitive reading concerns quantity, not ownership. A target genitive ending therefore need not mean of somebody or belonging to somebody.

Bosnian also has nominal case distinctions, so a reader may recognise a genitive-looking structure while assigning it the wrong function. For a source instruction involving a substance, determine whether it asks for an unspecified portion or the entire contextually identified amount.

If the source specifies all of a drink or ingredient, a target that suggests only some can weaken the instruction. If it leaves the quantity open, introducing a whole-quantity reading can make it unnecessarily restrictive. Matching the source and target case labels alone cannot establish whether that distinction has survived.

This is especially useful where a Bosnian sentence combines an owner with a quantity. The person associated with the container and the amount to consume are separate relationships. A target genitive can participate in one construction without independently establishing the other.

The Ukrainian suffix is not one universal translation of se

Jenkala contrasts помити, wash something or somebody, with помитися, wash oneself. She also describes reciprocal, impersonal and lexical uses of the Ukrainian -ся ending. A Bosnian source containing se should consequently be interpreted through its complete predicate rather than matched to the suffix automatically.

A source description of someone washing themselves differs from one describing two people meeting or a person experiencing an involuntary state. Even where a reflexive-looking element appears in both languages, the underlying participant relationship can differ.

Bosnian noun cases help identify actors and affected participants, while its reflexive expression can alter how those participants are related. Ukrainian needs its own combination of lexical verb, suffix and case construction. For this direction, the shared Slavic categories are useful analytical clues: retain who is being addressed, how much is involved and whether an action is self-directed, without assuming that a familiar category guarantees an identical target form.
