Bosnian to Swedish: separate blond hair, blue eyes and figurative descriptions

The noun determines how Bosnian plav is understood

Columbia’s BCS lesson explains that plav used of a person commonly refers to blond hair, while the same color vocabulary also occurs with eyes and ordinary blue objects. Its description of Stefan mentions both his appearance and his eyes. A Swedish translation must interpret each occurrence with what it describes rather than assigning one color equivalent throughout.

This distinction matters in a message identifying someone at a station or event. A description of blond hair should not become a claim that the person is blue. Equally, a reference to blue eyes should not be converted into a description of hair merely because the same Bosnian adjective appears nearby.

If the writer gives both hair and eye details, keep them separate. They can help identify the same person without expressing the same property. The body-part noun, an explicit hair reference or the wider portrait supplies information that a single isolated color word cannot.

Swedish blåögd also has a figurative reading

Svensk ordbok records blåögd for having blue eyes and also for being unsuspecting or credulous. The entry therefore documents a distinction between physical description and a judgment about someone’s outlook. A Swedish compound that is appropriate in one context may carry a different implication in another.

A Bosnian sentence about eye color should retain its descriptive purpose. A comment about someone trusting a promise concerns their judgment instead. Do not assume that every mention of blue eyes is figurative, or that a familiar Swedish compound always remains an innocent visual label regardless of context.

The dictionary also supplies inflected forms such as blåögt and blåögda. These are forms of the same adjective, not different eye colors. If the noun phrase changes, review its grammar without treating the changed ending as a new lexical meaning.

Physical identification and character assessment need different wording

In a practical description of a missing item’s owner, the relevant information may be hair color, eye color and clothing. Preserve whichever of those details the Bosnian source actually gives. Do not add a personality judgment to make the portrait sound more expressive; it would supply information the writer did not state.

In a review of someone’s decision, the surrounding sentence may concern trust, deception or an unrealistic expectation. That context can support a figurative interpretation of a Swedish expression, but it does not retroactively turn an unrelated Bosnian physical description into the same judgment. Follow the source’s claim rather than a target-language association.

In a story, an author can deliberately connect appearance and personality. Retain that possibility when the passage provides evidence for it. A short excerpt may not supply enough context to choose confidently, so reading the preceding description or subsequent remark can resolve more than repeatedly translating the isolated adjective.

The central comparison is what property the sentence attributes to the person. Hair, eyes and credulity are three different properties. A natural Swedish sentence is useful only if it preserves the particular one intended in the Bosnian passage.
