Bosnian to Swahili: identify what se contributes before choosing a verb extension

An action directed back at someone is not always mutual

Bosnian reflexive expressions can involve se, but the presence of that small word does not independently establish who acts on whom. When translating into Swahili, distinguish an action directed at oneself from an action performed reciprocally by two or more participants. The target verb can encode that relationship within its structure.

Thompson and Schleicher’s Swahili grammar gives Wanapendana, they love each other. The reciprocal extension supplies mutual participation; it does not merely announce that several people feel love. A Bosnian plural subject and an appropriate lexical verb must therefore be interpreted together before choosing such a target.

If the source describes two people supporting each other, reciprocity is central. If it describes several people independently helping somebody else, the same plural subject does not justify a reciprocal target. Confusing the two readings can remove an intended beneficiary and redirect the action back toward the group.

A singular participant can still enter a reciprocal relationship

The Swahili grammar also illustrates Nilikutana na rais, I met with the president. Here a singular subject participates in a relationship with another person introduced by na. A reciprocal-type verb need not always appear with an overt plural subject.

This is useful for Bosnian accounts of meetings. A source may name the writer as subject and place the other participant in a companion phrase. The target can preserve that arrangement rather than converting the sentence into an invented collective subject simply because a verb contains reciprocal morphology.

Bosnian case information helps identify whether another person accompanies the subject, receives something or undergoes the action. Those distinctions should be resolved before treating every participant after the verb as a direct object in Swahili. A participant introduced as a meeting partner is not automatically an affected patient.

The same reasoning prevents an overcorrection: a Swahili sentence with na and a singular subject is not incomplete merely because a Bosnian paraphrase could describe the event with a plural we. The important relationship is mutual participation, not the number of separately written subject expressions.

Additional extensions can change the beneficiary or cause

The grammar contrasts kuandika, to write, with kuandikia, to write to or for, and kuandikiana, to write to each other. This sequence demonstrates why recognising the lexical activity alone cannot establish a translation’s participant structure.

A Bosnian message may distinguish writing a document, writing for somebody and exchanging messages. These are not interchangeable uses of the same target root. A target extension can preserve a source recipient relationship or add reciprocity, but neither should appear without corresponding meaning in the original.

Bosnian source morphology also carries tense, person and number distinctions. Swahili verbal structure may package those alongside extensions, so a compact target word can contain both who acts and how participants relate. Conversely, a familiar root surrounded by the wrong extension can preserve the topic while changing the event. For this pair, follow the source’s actor, partner and beneficiary through the complete Swahili verb rather than equating se with one universal target suffix.
