Bosnian to Shona: noun classes, quantities and who receives the action

A counted noun controls more than its own shape

Bosnian expressions of quantity take case patterns that distinguish countable items from substances, as Alexander explains. Shona uses a different organizing system in which the chosen noun’s class affects accompanying forms. A Bosnian phrase about many items must therefore be interpreted for both the quantity and the target noun class rather than translated by attaching one universal word for many.

The FSI course’s unit 17 contrasts quantities of people, houses and roads with class-sensitive forms. Its examples pair vanhu with vazhinji and migwagwa with mizhinji. These are not merely alternative spellings of the same independent modifier. Once a Bosnian noun has been translated, the surrounding Shona phrase needs to follow the target class rather than the source noun’s final vowel or case ending.

No visible prefix does not mean no class

Mudzingwa and Kadenge show that Shona noun classification cannot always be read from an overt prefix. Their analysis treats some classes as having no pronounced nominal prefix and uses agreement as evidence of membership. For Bosnian readers, the absence of a familiar prefix at the beginning of a target noun is therefore insufficient reason to add one or assign a different class.

The authors contrast straightforward singular–plural pairings with other uses of class morphology, including size-related meanings. A Bosnian phrase describing a large person and one describing several people should not be merged into the same target operation. Number, evaluation and the identity of the noun are distinct components, even where Shona expresses them through related-looking material at a word’s beginning.

Derived person words need their own morphology

The same research compares ordinary class 1 nouns with person nouns derived from verbs and finds that they do not behave uniformly. In size-related derivation, some ordinary nouns replace a prefix while deverbal nouns can retain it beneath another prefix. A Bosnian description of somebody by an activity or role thus cannot be reshaped by blindly copying a pattern learned for another person noun.

This is relevant when the source distinguishes what someone is from what someone did on one occasion. Alexander’s Bosnian aspect discussion separates a general activity from a bounded occurrence. A target noun referring to a person associated with an activity is not automatically equivalent to a sentence reporting one completed act. Preserve that source distinction before evaluating any Shona prefix sequence used to characterize the person.

A beneficiary can be represented inside the target verb

Kodner’s discussion illustrates a Shona applicative: adding -ir- can introduce a participant for whose benefit an action is done. His cooking example distinguishes cooking pumpkins from cooking them for Mufaro. When a Bosnian source describes doing something for a relative, the Shona translation may therefore represent that beneficiary through the verb construction as well as through the person’s name.

The affected item and the beneficiary must remain separate. A Bosnian statement about giving or preparing something for another person should not make that person the thing prepared. Kodner also discusses subject and object agreement material on the verb. A compact Shona expression can carry those roles without matching Bosnian word boundaries, but the complete proposition must still identify the actor, the item and the person benefiting from the action.
