Bosnian to Samoan: respectful vocabulary and an exact pair

The social choice can change the drinking verb

A Bosnian message involving drinking needs more than a dictionary equivalent for the action. The Ministry for Pacific Peoples’ Samoan guide contrasts ordinary inu with respectful taumafa. That target vocabulary choice concerns the person and setting; it is separate from the Bosnian aspect distinction between piti and popiti that Alexander illustrates. Respect and completion are different properties of the message.

Consequently, a Samoan respectful drinking expression does not by itself establish that the drink has been finished, and a completed Bosnian drinking event does not by itself require chiefly vocabulary. Interpret the source action, its endpoint and the person referred to separately. A courteous target can still misstate the event if those decisions are collapsed into one verb substitution.

A house reference can carry respect as well as ownership

The ministry guide also distinguishes ordinary fale from respectful house terms associated with different high-status roles. A Bosnian phrase identifying somebody’s house should therefore be read for whom it concerns before the target vocabulary is chosen. Translating a possession is not simply attaching a person reference to the first house word found in a dictionary.

The guide explains that respectful language is commonly realized through particular vocabulary rather than entire conversations conducted exclusively in an elevated register. For a Bosnian practical message about visiting a home, this helps avoid turning every sentence into an indiscriminately ceremonial style. Preserve the actual person’s role and the purpose of the visit while choosing the relevant respectful terms where the context calls for them.

Two people and a larger group use different reference

Mayer’s Peace Corps manual distinguishes dual pronouns for exactly two people from forms for larger groups. It also distinguishes first-person groups that include the listener from those that exclude the listener. A Bosnian invitation involving the writer and one recipient therefore poses different target choices from a report about the writer travelling with somebody else.

The manual gives tā’ua for the speaker and listener and mā’ua for the speaker and another person, excluding the listener. Those target forms encode a participant decision that an unqualified translation of we can hide. If the Bosnian source names a relative as the companion, establish whether the addressee is that relative or a third person being informed. The same headcount does not guarantee the same Samoan pronoun.

The written style and the conversational style can differ

The modern orthography guide distinguishes written t-style from spoken k-style and illustrates tama against its conversational pronunciation kama. A Bosnian reader may therefore hear a form unlike the letters in a standard Samoan translation without that proving the translation is wrong. The source’s meaning can be preserved while the target is written and spoken using different conventional registers.

This is not permission to rewrite unfamiliar letters at random. The guide recommends t-style for ordinary writing, allowing a more casual exception in messages to family or friends. A Bosnian visitor’s formal request and a private chat may consequently have different stylistic expectations. Keep the target spelling purposeful, and distinguish that register choice from the separate questions of respect, group membership and whether the source event has reached completion.
