Bosnian to Russian: related Slavic structures still require different choices

Aspect is more than identifying a past event

Bosnian and Russian both organise verbs through aspectual distinctions. That shared feature can help preserve whether a source account presents an activity in progress or a completed event. It does not mean that every Bosnian verb prefix has a Russian counterpart with the same meaning.

The Russian UD aspect documentation contrasts пёк хлеб, baked or was baking bread, with испёк хлеб, baked or has baked bread with completion in view. The contrast concerns how the event is presented, rather than simply whether it took place before the present.

A Bosnian report about working on an item should therefore be distinguished from a report that the required result was achieved. The latter can support a completion reading; the former may only locate an activity in the past. Related-looking verbs should not override what the complete source sentence actually asserts.

Russian aspect is described as lexical: imperfective and perfective partners can be separate dictionary entries, and the relationship is not a regular inflectional rule. For this direction, choosing an aspectual counterpart may consequently require a different lexical item, not merely modifying a familiar-looking source stem.

A present-looking perfective can refer to the future

The Russian documentation notes that morphologically present forms of perfective verbs generally have future interpretation. A target form that looks structurally like a present-tense form is therefore not sufficient evidence that the translation describes an event happening now.

Bosnian source tense and aspect must be considered together when translating a promise or planned result. If the writer commits to completing an action later, replacing it with an ongoing present activity would weaken or change the commitment. Conversely, a report that an activity is currently under way should not turn into a promise of later completion.

This is particularly consequential in short status messages, where an omitted temporal phrase leaves the verb to carry much of the distinction. The source event’s completion status should remain separate from its location before, during or after the moment of writing.

The presence of a copula and a reflexive word can change

Russian commonly omits the present copula in equational and descriptive clauses. The UD example Это Лена identifies Lena without an overt equivalent of is. Bosnian uses forms of biti in comparable present constructions. A shorter Russian clause can thus express a complete identification rather than omit the predicate’s essential meaning.

This omission should not erase distinctions between a present description and a past account. The Bosnian specification records bio, bila and bilo in its participial paradigm. Their source role and temporal construction still need interpretation even when Russian present identification often contains no overt copula.

Russian also writes reflexive verbs as single words; the documentation illustrates моется, washes oneself. Bosnian reflexive expressions can contain a separate se. Written word count therefore does not indicate whether the reflexive relationship has been preserved. Identify whether the source expression is genuinely self-directed or belongs to a different reflexive construction before interpreting the Russian suffix. Shared Slavic categories make comparison productive, but they do not make every similar-looking sentence a word-for-word conversion.
