Bosnian to Portuguese (Portugal): distinguish an ongoing event from a finished interval

An action in progress is not necessarily happening now

A Bosnian description of an activity can distinguish its temporal setting from whether the activity is viewed as unfolding or completed. Portuguese used in Portugal also makes both decisions. The construction estar a followed by an infinitive is useful for an activity viewed in progress, but its auxiliary still locates that activity in time.

Ciberdúvidas illustrates Ele está a comer, he is eating. European Portuguese commonly favours this construction where Brazilian Portuguese often uses a gerund. The preference is not an absolute boundary between all speakers, and the presence of a gerund does not by itself make a sentence unintelligible in Portugal.

For a Bosnian source, the more consequential issue is whether the target describes the right stage of the event. An action taking place at the moment of another past event needs a different reading from an action occurring at the time of writing. The infinitive alone cannot establish that difference.

Past duration does not imply an unfinished activity

Carla Marques contrasts Estive a ler durante duas horas, I spent two hours reading, with an imperfect construction. The former presents a reading interval as concluded while still portraying reading as an activity extended through time. A Portuguese progressive construction therefore need not mean that the activity remains unfinished now.

This matters when translating a Bosnian account of time spent on a task. The original may report a bounded period of work without asserting that the whole project was completed. A target must distinguish completion of the reported interval from completion of the object or assignment itself.

Bosnian verbal aspect gives useful evidence, but a source aspect category cannot be replaced mechanically by one Portuguese tense. The target viewpoint also depends on temporal expressions and the relationship between clauses. A duration phrase and a completed task are different kinds of information.

The Bosnian specification records participial forms such as bio and bila, distinguishing masculine and feminine singular. These source endings may help identify a participant in a past construction. They do not determine whether the Portuguese auxiliary should present an event from within its course or as a closed interval.

A second event can locate the first within its course

The same Portuguese discussion uses Estava a ler quando a Maria chegou: reading was already in progress when Maria arrived. The arrival is situated within the reading activity. This is a more specific relationship than simply placing two activities somewhere in the past.

In a Bosnian narrative containing a main activity and an arrival or interruption, identify whether the second event interrupts an existing activity or precedes a subsequent one. Changing that relationship can change the explanation of what a participant witnessed or why they could not respond.

A source account that backgrounds an ongoing activity should not become a target sequence suggesting that the activity began only after the second event. Conversely, an explicitly bounded interval should not lose its endpoint merely because the target contains estar a. European Portuguese offers ways to retain duration, viewpoint and past reference together; the translation needs the combination that fits the Bosnian narrative.
