Bosnian to Traditional Mongolian: spelling, pronunciation and word meaning are separate choices

A familiar borrowing can have a different written representation

A Bosnian source can contain an internationally recognisable word without making its Mongolian spelling predictable. The selected target uses the traditional script, whose written forms are not simply the source Latin letters converted one by one.

Janhunen distinguishes a spoken representation taraaxter, Cyrillic Khalkha traktor and Written Mongol traktur or taraktur for tractor. These forms illustrate different representation systems. The Roman spellings in that linguistic discussion are explanatory transcriptions, not examples of the requested traditional-script output.

For a Bosnian instruction mentioning a tractor, the target must first identify the intended object and then use an appropriate Mongolian written form. An apparently extra vowel is not necessarily an accidental translation insertion. Conversely, retaining the familiar Bosnian spelling does not establish that the word has been written in Traditional Mongolian.

A dictionary root may have physical and extended meanings

The Mongolian explanatory dictionary’s entry nom includes the ordinary book sense and extended educational or knowledge-related uses. Its expression nomyn san identifies a library in the listed lexical material. The meaning of a larger phrase therefore cannot always be obtained by treating each occurrence of the book root as one physical volume.

A Bosnian source requesting a book and a source referring to library services involve different objects or institutions. A target that selects the right dictionary root but ignores its phrase-level use can make a library into a collection of unrelated book words. Establish the source’s intended referent before judging the target by an isolated gloss.

The dictionary displays Cyrillic lexical information alongside its treatment of Mongolian words. Such a reference can establish meaning without itself being the final script representation requested for the translation. A readable explanatory gloss and a target-script message serve different purposes.

A letter can look different within the joined word

Kushim Jiang’s technical note on Mongolian encoding and shaping distinguishes characters from the glyph forms displayed in context. It describes isolated, initial, medial and final joining positions. A traditional-script letter can consequently appear differently inside a word without becoming an unrelated letter.

A Bosnian reader accustomed to largely stable Latin letter shapes should not rebuild a Mongolian word by copying isolated display forms from a chart. The complete encoded word and its contextual shaping are part of how the target is written. An unfamiliar joined form is not automatically a spelling error.

The distinction also limits what a visual check can prove. Correctly joined letters cannot establish that a Bosnian owner, recipient or action was translated accurately. The source specification’s case forms identify those relationships, while script rendering handles how the selected target wording is displayed.

For this direction, separate the lexical task from representation: identify the source object or institution, choose the appropriate Mongolian expression, and present it through the requested traditional writing system. A transcription can explain pronunciation, and a dictionary can clarify meaning, but neither should silently replace the target script. The tractor and book examples show why familiar vocabulary still requires all three decisions.
