Bosnian to Malayalam: joined spelling and the scope of negation

A joined negative can preserve the complete source message

Donald Davis’s Malayalam sandhi guide shows that grammatical combinations can change the visible form of their components. The example ചെയ്തു plus ഇല്ല becomes ചെയ്തില്ല. For a Bosnian reader, a negative expressed inside a joined target form should not be mistaken for a missing negative merely because no isolated word appears where the source had one. Interpret the complete Malayalam expression before comparing its spacing with the Bosnian sentence.

This matters because Bosnian negative statements can differ in what they deny. Alexander’s chapter discusses nema with a genitive phrase as an expression of absence. Denying the availability of an item is not the same message as denying that somebody performed an action. A Malayalam joined negative needs to match the source proposition, not merely provide something that looks like a general negative marker.

A quantity phrase is not automatically possession

Alexander distinguishes Bosnian measure expressions involving countable objects from those involving substances. A genitive after an amount therefore cannot be translated as if it always identifies an owner. When a Bosnian message concerns some money, the target must preserve the amount relationship rather than silently create somebody’s money.

The Malayalam sandhi guide separately illustrates പണം taking a possessive-related ending to produce പണത്തിന്റെ. That attested morphological combination demonstrates why a dictionary form can change when an ending is added; it does not establish that every Bosnian genitive should select that target ending. First determine whether the source expresses quantity, ownership or another relation, then assess the resulting Malayalam form in its own construction.

Short words and long written forms need different comparisons

Davis explains that Malayalam can join material both within words and across words, sometimes making a phrase look like a single long string. A Bosnian sentence with several separated words can therefore correspond to a compact written target expression without losing several meanings. Counting spaces is an unreliable way to judge whether every source component has been translated.

The guide also shows sound changes when endings attach, including consonant replacement and doubling. These are grammatical spelling patterns rather than proof of accidental repeated typing. For a Bosnian speaker copying a Malayalam result, removing an unfamiliar repeated consonant can damage a legitimate form. Identify the target word’s structure before changing a spelling merely to make it resemble a shorter dictionary entry.

Consonant signs and invitations carry real information

The university script guide distinguishes ordinary consonant letters with an inherent vowel from consonant-only cillŭ forms. Its മകൻ example means son and includes a final consonant-only letter. For Bosnian family references, the visible final form belongs to the target word; it should not be treated as decorative punctuation or discarded when preserving the person’s relationship.

The same guide gives പോകാം for let us go. Compare that invitation with the Bosnian textbook’s proposal to go out for food and drink: both involve proposing shared action, rather than merely reporting movement. Alexander additionally distinguishes waiting from reception on arrival in čekati and dočekati. Thus, even after the Malayalam script has been copied correctly, the target must still preserve whether the Bosnian message invites movement, reports waiting or promises to meet someone. A readable script alone does not decide the event.
