Bosnian to Kinyarwanda: a person’s role and location need different predicates

Bosnian biti does not select one universal target form

A Bosnian sentence can use forms of biti when identifying a person, describing them or locating them. Kinyarwanda distinguishes constructions that a Bosnian reader might initially group under the same verb. Translating the predicate requires deciding whether the source tells the reader who someone is or where they are.

The Peace Corps course contrasts John ni muremure, John is tall, with Mupemba ari mu biro, Mupemba is in the office. These examples illustrate different third-person present constructions for a characteristic and a location. Substituting one target form merely because the Bosnian source contains is can produce the wrong construction.

The distinction matters in a short message about an employee. A source clause identifying their job and another locating them in a building perform different functions even if both use the same Bosnian copular verb. The target predicates need to preserve that difference rather than repeat one Kinyarwanda form for every occurrence.

The course’s introductory treatment is useful for these examples; it is not a complete account of every use of kuba. In particular, its third-person contrast should not be projected onto all persons or every tense without examining the actual target construction.

A respectful plural does not necessarily add recipients

Bosnian distinguishes singular and plural personal reference, while respectful address can complicate the relationship between grammatical form and the number of people being addressed. Kinyarwanda also uses plural greeting forms for formality. A target greeting that resembles a plural is not automatically directed to a group.

The course pairs informal Uraho? with formal Muraho? This is a practical contrast when opening a Bosnian message to one person: the target choice can express the relationship with that person while retaining a single recipient.

A source message addressed politely to one official should not become an announcement to several officials merely because the greeting uses a formal plural construction. Conversely, the translation should not replace a greeting to an actual group with an intimate singular just to make it appear numerically simple.

Bosnian vocative forms, including titles recorded in the morphological specification, can also help establish the source address relationship. Their function is to address a participant, not to identify the sentence’s location or grammatical subject. Keep that function distinct from the target copular choices used in the body of the message.

Gender information need not appear in the same place

The Bosnian specification records gendered participial contrasts such as bio and bila. These can help recover the referent of a past source clause even when no personal noun is repeated. A Kinyarwanda translation should preserve that referent without assuming that every source gender ending must acquire a matching target ending.

In the course’s office-location example, the target predicate establishes location rather than independently identifying a male or female participant. If a Bosnian account changes from one person to another, the target needs a recoverable subject; repeating the appropriate name can be more faithful than treating a target predicate as though it carried the same gender evidence as the source.

This direction therefore requires three separate readings of a compact source sentence: what the predicate asserts, whom the message addresses and which participant it describes. Kinyarwanda can express each relationship clearly, but its location predicate, respectful greeting and personal reference do not reproduce Bosnian morphology component by component.
