Bosnian to Kashmiri: second-position clitics and a second-position finite verb are different rules

Do not treat every early source word as the finite predicate

Columbia’s Bosnian lesson places its introductory clitic cluster after the first significant unit and includes short object pronouns, li, and se among the forms discussed. This is a rule about a particular class of unstressed elements. It is not a requirement that the lexical verb itself occupy the same position.

Koul describes Kashmiri main-clause organization through a second-position finite verb. The similarity of the term second position can therefore mislead: Bosnian clitic placement and the Kashmiri finite-verb pattern organize different grammatical material. Identify which source word performs which function before constructing the target clause.

A question particle and an auxiliary do not exchange jobs

The Bosnian lesson gives Vidiš li ga? as a question containing a verb, question particle, and short object reference. The particle helps organize the source question but does not mean be or perform the work of a target auxiliary.

Koul’s Kashmiri present-tense description combines a finite auxiliary with a main verb bearing -a:n. In such a target construction, the finite auxiliary and lexical activity have distinct forms and positions. Translating the Bosnian li through a word chosen solely because it occupies an early Kashmiri position would change grammatical functions rather than preserve the question. Retain interrogative force, the activity, and its participants separately.

A beginning phrase can contain more than one word

The Bosnian teaching rule refers to the first significant unit, not simply the first letter sequence separated by a space. Koul likewise describes Kashmiri constituents preceding the finite verb. A source opening noun phrase can therefore be more than a single token.

For an original Bosnian sentence beginning with a person’s full name and descriptive title, keep that identification together when interpreting the event. Do not split the target name phrase merely to place a verb after the second written word. The relevant target structure is a constituent followed by the finite verb, not a numerical count of spaces in the source sentence.

A relative description needs another target analysis

The Columbia reading includes Bosnian relative descriptions introduced with koji or koja to identify a city or a sister. These expressions form descriptions inside a larger account; they are not automatically independent main-clause statements.

Koul distinguishes headed and correlative Kashmiri relatives and also discusses participial relative constructions with restricted functions. His word-order discussion explicitly separates relative constructions from the simple main-clause pattern. A Bosnian phrase identifying the sister who performs an activity must consequently be reconstructed as an appropriate target description, not forced into the same order as a standalone statement about that sister. Preserve which noun the description identifies and who performs its embedded activity. Recognizing a source clitic cluster does not settle the Kashmiri relative construction, just as recognizing a main-clause finite verb does not identify every source short pronoun. The two languages’ early-position patterns need role-based analysis before their apparent similarity becomes useful.
