Bosnian to Inuinnaqtun: matching relatives and the event being described

Kinship distinctions can be preserved without inventing an equation

Bosnian distinguishes family connections that matter in practical introductions. The textbook identifies amidža as a father’s brother and daidža as a mother’s brother. The community-produced Inuinnaqtun dictionary likewise records pangnaarjuk as an uncle on the father’s side. This gives a documented target possibility for a paternal-uncle reference, rather than a reason to flatten every Bosnian uncle into one unspecified relationship.

The two resources do not establish that every kinship category aligns perfectly. Determine whether the Bosnian word identifies a blood relative or a relative by marriage before selecting the Inuinnaqtun entry. When a visitor is told who will meet them, the family connection is identifying information. A target expression that names the wrong branch of the family can point to the wrong person even if the rest of the travel message is clear.

Waiting and receiving a visitor are different events

Alexander explains Bosnian čekati as waiting and dočekati as meeting or receiving somebody upon arrival. Inuinnaqtun offers documented distinctions inside this area too: the dictionary records utaqqijuq for waiting and separately glosses aittiijuq as waiting for somebody to come home. These are useful comparisons, not an instruction to substitute one form for every Bosnian sentence involving a visitor.

A Bosnian pickup arrangement may assert the reception itself, whereas a statement about waiting at home may describe an activity before any arrival occurs. The target must preserve which event is promised or reported. Where the source includes a family member, resolve both parts together: the person’s relationship and whether that person waits, receives the traveller, or expects somebody to return home.

A greeting sheet is not a universal sentence-building rule

The Northwest Territories conversation resource gives Qanuritpin? for asking how somebody is and Atira followed by a name for introducing oneself. These are useful complete target models for a Bosnian introduction. Their compactness does not mean the separate words of a Bosnian greeting should be translated one at a time into pieces of either expression.

The government sheet places Inuinnaqtun and Inuktitut on separate pages and gives different forms for corresponding conversational purposes. Retain the requested Inuinnaqtun variety when choosing a greeting or name introduction. A Bosnian speaker should not replace a verified Inuinnaqtun phrase with an Inuktitut form solely because both appear in the same northern-language resource or perform the same social function.

Short source words need complete target meanings

Bosnian piti and popiti distinguish an activity from a completed instance of consumption in Alexander’s grammar. A target dictionary entry glossed drinks does not by itself establish the equivalent of every source aspectual form. For a Bosnian meal report, the Inuinnaqtun sentence must communicate whether the speaker describes an activity, an offer or a finished drink.

The 1996 dictionary explicitly reflects local community knowledge and a chosen spelling standard. Its introduction describes revision by instructors and elders rather than presenting interchangeable forms for every Inuit community. When using its entries for a Bosnian message, keep that documented scope visible. Word length and unfamiliar spelling are not reasons to shorten a target form: the relevant unit is the event and participant relationship that the entire expression conveys.
