Bosnian to Traditional Chinese: family branches and reference inside a noun phrase

The paternal side does not determine the uncle’s age

The Bosnian textbook identifies amidža as a father’s brother and daidža as a mother’s brother. Traditional Chinese kinship vocabulary can require a further distinction on the paternal side. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education chart separates 伯父 for the father’s older brother from 叔父 or 叔叔 for the father’s younger brother. A Bosnian paternal-uncle reference does not by itself establish which of those age relationships applies.

When the source does not supply the father’s relative age, avoid inventing it merely to obtain the shortest Chinese label. Retain an explanatory relationship or use available context. The maternal side is organized differently in the chart: 舅父 and 舅舅 appear for the mother’s brothers. The useful translation preserves the connection actually stated in Bosnian before adding any finer target distinction.

A family word can also be a social form of address

The ministry’s 叔叔 entry also includes a broader address to a man of the father’s generation who is younger than the father. Thus, the same written target word need not prove a biological relationship. A Bosnian introduction of a real uncle and a friendly address to an unrelated adult should remain distinguishable in the surrounding Chinese sentence.

This is especially important if the message identifies the person who will collect a visitor. A Chinese form of address that sounds natural can still leave the source relationship unclear. Preserve whether the Bosnian speaker means a particular relative, a family friend or simply the adult being addressed. The person’s name and the family label contribute different identifying information.

The owner can remain clear without an overt possessive particle

Oxford’s Mandarin grammar explains that 的 can be omitted between a pronoun and a close relationship noun. Its 他妹妹 example identifies somebody’s younger sister without a separate printed possessive particle. A Bosnian reader should therefore not assume that the target has lost ownership or relationship reference merely because no isolated counterpart of a source possessive appears.

Bosnian svoj nevertheless carries a specific subject-owned reading in the textbook’s third-person examples. Resolve that source owner before selecting the Chinese relationship phrase. Omitting 的 in an appropriate construction is different from leaving the owner unidentified. The target must still make clear whose sister or other relative is involved, even where its normal phrase structure is shorter than the Bosnian expression.

A description before 的 may identify the relative

The Oxford account also places a clause describing a noun before 的 and the noun itself. A Bosnian message that identifies a person by something they did may therefore have its descriptive material reorganized in Chinese. Do not mistake the earlier event description for the main assertion until the head noun and the rest of the sentence have been identified.

The University of Texas vocabulary list pairs Simplified and Traditional spellings such as 问题 and 問題. The selected Traditional script is a writing choice rather than a new family-relation system or a guarantee of one regional style. After preserving the correct characters, the translation must still retain the Bosnian relative’s parental branch, any stated age distinction and the owner or event description that identifies the person. Character conversion cannot fill information the source never supplied.
