Bosnian to Simplified Chinese: amounts, containers and completed actions

A measure phrase identifies the unit being ordered

Alexander explains Bosnian genitives after expressions of quantity, distinguishing countable things from substances. In Chinese, the chosen measure expression can identify not only how much but how the substance is packaged. Fang and Connelly contrast 一杯啤酒, a glass of beer, with 一瓶啤酒, a bottle of beer. A Bosnian order should preserve that container distinction rather than translate both as an undifferentiated drink.

This matters when a source mentions a number and a beverage separately. Selecting the correct Chinese beverage noun does not preserve whether the customer requests glasses, bottles or some unspecified amount. The classifier or container expression belongs to the intended quantity, while the Bosnian noun’s genitive ending belongs to the source construction. Neither can simply be copied as the other.

A completed serving and a completed drink are separate

Bosnian piti and popiti distinguish drinking activity from an individual completed consumption in Alexander’s account. A Chinese sentence about ordering a bottle and one about finishing its contents therefore need different event interpretations even when the noun phrase is identical. Quantity and aspect express separate information in a hospitality message.

Oxford’s Chinese grammar illustrates that a journey to a bookshop and the purchase intended there can be completed independently. Someone can go there but not buy anything. Apply that event-by-event analysis to a Bosnian restaurant account: being given a drink does not establish that it was drunk, and a completed visit does not establish that every planned action took place. Avoid spreading a completion reading across the entire source sequence without evidence.

Counting an action is different from counting its object

Fang and Connelly distinguish an action measure that emphasizes going through an event from beginning to end from a more general occurrence count. Their discussion of 遍 is useful when Bosnian asks for something to be repeated in full. The target can need to distinguish repeating the whole procedure from merely doing something one more time.

The same dictionary gives 本 with bound items such as books and passports. A Bosnian message about reading one book once therefore contains two independent counts: the object and the occurrence. A Chinese translation that has the right numeral beside the book can still miss the number or completeness of the reading event. Establish which count each source expression modifies before interpreting the target measure word.

One past event and prior experience need different readings

Oxford distinguishes the use of 过 for experience from a simple report of an individual completed event. A Bosnian speaker asking whether someone has ever visited a place is not necessarily asking whether the person completed today’s planned trip. Preserve that difference rather than attach a single past-looking Chinese marker to every source past form.

The University of Texas vocabulary pairs also show that Simplified forms such as 问题 and 喜欢 correspond to Traditional spellings used for the same vocabulary. Here the selected target is Simplified Chinese. That script choice does not resolve the event interpretation: a correctly simplified sentence still needs the right container, object count and reading of completion or experience. Those are the parts that determine whether the Bosnian request or report remains accurate.
