Bosnian to Assamese: a human classifier can add a social meaning

Source noun gender does not settle the target classifier

The Bosnian case study separates genitive possession from dative recipient reference. For an Assamese kinship expression, that distinction establishes whether somebody is the relative’s possessor or the recipient of an action involving that relative. Neither case label independently determines an Assamese social classifier or address level.

Samhita Bharadwaj’s Assamese fieldwork study identifies -gɔraki as an honorific classifier usable with both men and women. Its illustration tini-gɔraki mohila/lok concerns three women or persons. Thus a Bosnian feminine noun does not require a target classifier merely because it looks gender-specific, and a masculine source noun does not rule out a classifier also used with women.

Counting people and presenting them respectfully are separate choices

Bharadwaj’s examples show honorific distinctions in human classifiers, including choices influenced by the situation and the referent’s presentation. A numeral-plus-classifier phrase can therefore convey more than the number of people involved. The paper’s conclusions are scoped to its standard Assamese data centered on Sivasagar.

For an original Bosnian report that three people attended a meeting, first retain the exact three participants. Then determine whether the Assamese phrase presents them respectfully, informally, or with another contextual effect supported by the source. A correct numeral alone does not establish the rest of that target phrase. Conversely, choosing a respectful classifier must not turn an unspecified Bosnian group into exactly three people.

Kinship possession can encode the person addressed

Bharadwaj contrasts tomar deutara with aponar deutak, both meaning your father but differing in address level. The possessed kinship word participates in that contrast through a suffix. The relevant respect distinction concerns the person represented as possessor, rather than automatically describing the father’s own status.

In a Bosnian message about the recipient’s father, the recipient and father are two participants. A translator who chooses an Assamese owner construction solely by the father’s age could therefore resolve the wrong relationship. Identify who is addressed and whose relative is discussed. The source noun phrase’s ownership relation needs to survive even when the target expresses part of that relation on the kinship word itself.

Case identifies a phrase’s role, not the social value of its classifier

The Bosnian study lists accusative object or goal functions, dative recipient or goal functions, and genitive possession among its prototypical case meanings. These are grammatical relationships within the source event. None is an instruction to select an Assamese honorific classifier merely from the source ending.

An original source sentence can mention a respected visitor as the recipient of something and a group of workers as its senders. Determine the two roles from the Bosnian construction before building Assamese reference. Making both phrases equally respectful would not repair a translation that swaps sender and recipient. Likewise, maintaining the roles does not by itself preserve the interpersonal effect of the Assamese classifiers. Case interpretation and classifier choice solve different parts of the same translation: who participates in which way, and how each human referent is presented.
