Bodo to Turkish: a possessor, a specific object and an attention-directing word are different functions

Two possession systems can put person marking on opposite sides

Bharadwaj’s Bodo fieldwork records aŋ-ni a.pʰa, my father, with possessor information preceding the kinship root. Turkish Textbook gives benim babam for the same owner relationship, using a possessive ending on the family noun. The broad similarity is that both constructions identify whose relative is meant; the position and shape of their person marking are different.

A Bodo report that my father came must still describe the father as the arriving participant. The writer’s first-person value inside the family phrase does not tell the Turkish predicate to mean I came. Establish the head of the source phrase and its role in the event before selecting target person morphology. The compactness of either possession construction can otherwise conceal a change of actor.

The Turkish lesson also shows that possession endings can trigger spelling changes, as in kitap becoming kitabı in an appropriate possessive phrase. A changed target stem is not necessarily a different object. For a Bodo message naming a relative’s book, the Turkish owner relationship and word’s spelling have to be read together rather than checked against an unchanged dictionary form alone.

A marked Bodo object does not settle the Turkish ending mechanically

Krishna Boro’s account relates Bodo object marking to discourse prominence, with factors including specificity, human reference and contrast. Turkish also distinguishes specific from nonspecific objects, but that is a target construction with its own distribution. Turkish Textbook contrasts ev alıyorum, buying a house without specifying which, with evi alıyorum, buying the particular house already in mind.

If Bodo refers to an established house being discussed, losing that identity can change a practical purchase message. Conversely, an overt Bodo ending is not permission to assume a pointing meaning such as this house here. Recover which object the source identifies and then select Turkish object marking for that reading, rather than aligning one source ending with one target suffix in every sentence.

The Turkish object ending also varies according to the word’s vowel and final sound. A Bodo reader should therefore not expect the same written ending on every Turkish participant. Different suffix spellings can preserve the same grammatical relationship. The target’s actual object reference matters more than whether its final letters visually resemble another translated example.

Drawing attention is different from describing distance alone

The Turkish pronoun lesson explains şu as directing attention to something newly introduced or not currently in focus, rather than merely occupying a middle distance between this and that. Bodo discourse prominence is also relevant to what the speaker wants noticed, but the two resources are not identical. A prominent source object may already be familiar, whereas a Turkish attention-directing expression can introduce an object the listener has not yet attended to.

In a Bodo request to take a document, determine whether the document is already under discussion or being newly pointed out. The Turkish choice should fit that interaction while retaining the intended object. A possessive suffix says whose document it is; object marking says how it participates in the clause; an attention-directing expression guides the listener toward it. Combining them accurately requires preserving those separate source relationships rather than treating every overt marker as emphasis.
