Bodo to Tongan: who is included, who leaves and how a word is spelled all affect meaning

A pair of participants can include or exclude the listener

POLLEX records Tongan kitaua as an inclusive dual and kimaua as an exclusive dual. Both concern two participants, but only the inclusive form includes the addressee. If a Bodo message names the writer and one companion, establish whether that companion is the person receiving the message before choosing a Tongan first-person pair reference. Counting two people alone does not settle the target form.

This can affect the practical meaning of a Bodo invitation. A statement about the writer and a third person going somewhere is different from a proposal involving the writer and the listener. The target dual must not silently turn a report into an invitation, or exclude the intended companion. The distinction is grounded in the source participants, even if the Bodo message identifies them through names rather than a directly equivalent pronoun.

Formal address does not identify the departing person

Bharadwaj’s Kokrajhar Bodo fieldwork distinguishes neutral nɰŋ from formal nɰŋtʰaŋ. Tongan also has register-sensitive farewell expressions, but choosing a respectful form is only part of the translation. The Peace Corps course distinguishes ‘Alu ā, said to someone leaving while the speaker stays, from Nofo ā, said to someone staying while the speaker leaves.

A Bodo farewell addressed respectfully to a host may occur as the visitor departs; the same social relationship can also occur when the host goes elsewhere. Retain that movement role rather than choosing the target solely from the source’s politeness level. A courteous farewell directed to the wrong departing or remaining participant still changes the exchange.

The Bodo suffix chapter supplies another travel distinction: a repetition marker can mean returning back with motion verbs. In a Bodo message about coming back later, preserve the return as an event in addition to choosing the appropriate Tongan farewell. A goodbye formula does not itself state that the person will return, and an inclusive pair reference does not establish that both people are making the return trip.

A glottal mark can distinguish a word rather than decorate it

The Peace Corps introduction contrasts Tongan anga, behavior or attitude, with ‘anga, shark. It also distinguishes vowel length in spelling. A Bodo reader receiving Latin-script output should not treat the glottal mark as an optional quotation symbol to be removed. An ordinary source description of someone’s behavior must not acquire an animal meaning because the target spelling was simplified.

Bodo’s CIIL primer presents a different writing system, Devanagari, while the linguistic chapter transcribes its examples in broad IPA. Those Latin-looking Bodo research forms are not a model for Tongan spelling. A familiar-looking symbol may serve a different purpose in the target. Preserve the Tongan word’s own distinctions rather than substituting a pronunciation approximation designed around the source language.

The same care applies when a Bodo name sits next to a Tongan pair reference or farewell. The name identifies the individual; the pronoun identifies inclusion and number; the farewell identifies who goes or stays. These contributions can be visually adjacent without being interchangeable. Keeping the target glottal marks and vowels intact protects the actual words, while interpreting the source participants protects the social meaning of the message.
