Bodo to Swahili: keep reciprocal actions separate from self-directed ones

A Bodo verbal suffix can identify an exchange

Boro and Basumatary identify -lai as a reciprocal adverbial suffix in Bodo. Their broader account places adverbial suffixes between the verb base and inflectional material. An expression’s mutual-action meaning can therefore be carried within the source verb rather than through an independent phrase meaning each other.

The Swahili Learners’ Reference Grammar illustrates reciprocal verb formation with kusaidiana, to help each other, and kusikilizana, to listen to each other. A Bodo reciprocal event should retain that exchange when reconstructed in Swahili; translating only the unsuffixed source activity could leave the reader with helping or listening without establishing mutual participation.

Several people acting does not prove reciprocity

Narzary’s Bodo account distinguishes plural reflexive reference. Multiple participants can each act on themselves, so plurality and reciprocity must be separated before a Swahili verb is selected. The source relation among participants is more informative than the mere presence of a plural pronoun.

Consider an original Bodo description of several performers inspecting themselves in separate mirrors. They are numerous, but nobody needs to inspect another performer. A Swahili reciprocal would change that arrangement. Conversely, if the source describes performers helping one another prepare, independent self-directed actions would miss the exchange. The target must preserve who acts on whom, not just the group’s size.

A reciprocal verb need not have a plural grammatical subject

The Swahili grammar also permits certain reciprocal constructions with a singular subject and a partner introduced by na. Its illustration Nilikutana na rais means that the speaker met with the president. The second participant is present in the construction even though the grammatical subject is singular.

For a Bodo event involving two participants, do not force every Swahili sentence into a plural-subject frame simply to retain their interaction. Equally, a singular target subject is not proof that the event has lost its partner. Establish where the other participant is represented. This can affect emphasis: the source may foreground one participant while still describing a genuinely mutual encounter.

Other suffix meanings cannot be silently absorbed into reciprocal meaning

Boro and Basumatary show that Bodo adverbial suffixes can combine, and distinguish meanings such as continuation or additional occurrence from reciprocal -lai. A source verb may consequently express more than the bare existence of an exchange.

The Swahili grammar illustrates combinations of verb extensions, including kuandikiana for writing to each other. This demonstrates that target verb structure can carry several related contributions, but it does not establish a mechanical one-suffix-per-suffix conversion from Bodo. If a source exchange continues or happens further, preserve that temporal or additive contribution separately from reciprocity. Two people helping one another once and continuing to help one another are not the same event description. Analyze the full Bodo verb before deciding which Swahili construction expresses the exchange and which material retains the source’s additional meaning.
