Bodo to Somali: foregrounding a person does not automatically mean only

A restrictive source marker needs more than a focused name

Basumatary’s Bodo example aŋ-lo taŋgɯn restricts the going event to the speaker: only I will go. The pronoun identifies the actor, while the attached element excludes alternatives. Somali focus marking can foreground a participant, but foregrounding by itself should not be assumed to carry precisely that exclusive meaning.

Nilsson illustrates Sahra baa salaamaysa saaxiibkeed as foregrounding Sahra in a greeting event. The construction identifies the person receiving focus. It does not authorise translating every Bodo only-person statement as though ordinary target focus alone necessarily excluded everyone else.

If a Bodo announcement contrasts the writer with all other potential travellers, the restriction is part of the claim. A Somali sentence that merely highlights the writer can leave that stronger claim unexpressed. Conversely, adding only to a source that simply introduces an actor can create an exclusion the writer never intended.

Changing the focus position can change the question answered

Nilsson explains that baa or ayaa follows the focused noun phrase, while waxa or waxaa can focus a noun phrase at the clause’s end. The related greeting examples can consequently foreground the person greeting or the friend being greeted. The event participants remain recognisable, but the information presented as salient changes.

Bodo distinguishes aŋ-khɯu as the affected person in its calling example. When translating that sort of sentence, determine whether the source contrasts callers or the people called. A target foregrounding the affected participant answers a different conversational question from one foregrounding the actor.

The difference is useful in a correction. If someone asks who called the writer, focusing a target expression for the writer may preserve the vocabulary yet miss the requested information. If the question concerns whom a known person called, the object can be the relevant focus. Follow the source exchange rather than select a particle solely because it appears frequently in Somali declaratives.

A personal group has its own inclusion distinction

Basumatary gives Bodo zɯŋ for we. Somali short subject forms include aannu excluding the listener and aynu including the listener in Nilsson’s account. The intended group must therefore be established independently of any focus or restrictive material.

A Bodo source meaning only our group will go still leaves a practical question: does that group include the listener? Restriction identifies which alternatives are excluded, whereas the Somali personal form identifies who belongs to the group. Neither decision replaces the other.

Nilsson also discusses how short subject pronouns occur within sentence-particle constructions, with special behaviour when a focused subject is involved. A target personal element should therefore be evaluated with its particle and predicate rather than as an isolated dictionary substitution for Bodo we. In this direction, preserve actor and affected participant, decide what is foregrounded, retain any genuine only or also meaning, and separately recover the listener’s membership in the first-person group. Those distinctions can coexist in a short message without being expressed by one universal marker.
