Bodo to Burmese: a plural we can still identify the speaker differently

More than one participant does not identify who is speaking

Narzary records a Bodo first-person plural pronoun without a male–female contrast. Its plural meaning identifies a group including the speaker, but the form does not itself establish whether that speaker is a man or woman. The same limitation applies when the group includes participants of different genders.

Northern Illinois University’s Burmese lesson contrasts ကျွန်တော်တို့, we spoken by men, and ကျွန်မတို့, we spoken by women. In these teaching examples, the choice follows the person speaking rather than requiring every member of the represented group to share that person’s gender. A Bodo group announcement therefore needs its speaking role identified before selecting between these Burmese forms.

A quoted announcement can change voice when retold

Imagine a Bodo passage where a woman states that her group will return, and a man later repeats the group’s decision as a participant. Bodo first-person plural reference can identify the relevant group in each utterance without a corresponding gender distinction in the pronoun. The Burmese teaching contrast makes the two speaking situations visibly different.

The translator should preserve who delivers each line. If the first announcement remains a direct quotation, its speaker remains the woman even within a man’s retelling. If it is recast as his own first-person announcement, the speaking role changes. Selecting one Burmese we for the entire paragraph could therefore erase the difference between quoted voice and the current narrator.

The lesson uses different plural material for nouns and pronouns

The NIU lesson illustrates Burmese noun plurals with တွေ, including teachers, while its pronoun examples use တို့. This is a specific contrast in the teaching material, not evidence that one visible ending can be attached indiscriminately to every target expression.

Narzary’s Bodo study separately illustrates noun plurality and personal-pronoun number. When a Bodo account refers first to several teachers and then to we, translate each phrase according to its target construction. Reusing the Burmese noun plural pattern simply because both source expressions involve several people would collapse a distinction the lesson explicitly presents.

Repeated Bodo adjectives can carry a missing number clue

Narzary also documents repeated adjectives in Bodo descriptions of good houses and new clothes where the noun lacks a plural suffix. The plural interpretation is available from the whole phrase; a noun considered in isolation could make the source appear singular.

For a Burmese translation of such a description, establish whether the source concerns one item or several before deciding its noun phrase. This is especially consequential when a later Bodo pronoun refers back to the collection. A passage can contain multiple houses, several teachers, and a speaker’s group, yet those three plural references need not identify the same set. Burmese noun plurality and the gender-associated first-person forms illustrated by NIU answer different questions: how the noun phrase is constructed, and who is speaking for a group. Keeping those questions apart prevents a source number clue from becoming an invented identity claim.
