Bodo to Māori: determine who belongs to we before choosing a pronoun

The listener’s membership changes the target word

Basumatary gives Bodo zɯŋ as we. A message using that personal reference may include the listener, or it may describe the writer with other people while leaving the listener outside the group. Māori requires a distinction that must be recovered from the intended participants rather than from an English gloss alone.

Kupu contrasts tāua and māua for two-person groups. Tāua includes the speaker and listener; māua includes the speaker and one other person while excluding the listener. A Bodo arrangement involving the writer and a companion therefore cannot be translated accurately until it is clear whether that companion is the addressee.

This affects a practical invitation. A statement meaning that the writer and listener will go together differs from a report that the writer and another person will go. The wrong Māori pronoun can convert an invitation into information about someone else’s plans, even if the place, time and verb are translated correctly.

Two participants and a larger group are distinguished

For groups of three or more, the corresponding Māori contrast is tātou versus mātou. The inclusive option includes the listener; the exclusive option does not. Changing from a two-person trip to an outing involving additional people can therefore require another target pronoun even though Bodo still uses a word glossed we.

The point is not to add an unnecessary numerical explanation to every source sentence. It is to identify the actual group when the Māori form encodes its size. A Bodo message that first mentions the writer and a sibling, then includes the listener, has changed both membership and potentially number. Reusing the first target pronoun throughout could preserve neither.

Kupu likewise contrasts rāua for two third persons with rātou for three or more. If Bodo reference shifts from the writer’s group to those travelling separately, the target distinction still matters. The writer’s exclusion does not remove the need to determine whether two people or a larger group are intended.

Bodo focus labels are not a ready-made clusivity system

Basumatary labels some Bodo pronoun-attached elements inclusive and exclusive, but the supplied examples concern addition and restriction, including aŋ-lo meaning only I. Those labels should not be treated as proof that a focus suffix automatically selects Māori inclusive or exclusive we.

Only I excludes other actors from the event. Māori exclusive we, by contrast, includes other people with the speaker while excluding the listener. These are different sets of participants. Translating the restrictive Bodo example with an exclusive plural would turn one traveller into a group.

The source’s gender-neutral third-person bi also need not force an additional gender choice: Kupu lists Māori ia for both he and she. This resemblance is useful, but it does not erase the larger differences in group reference. For this pair, separate three questions that an English gloss can hide: one person or several, two or more than two, and whether the listener belongs to a first-person group. Then preserve any Bodo only or also meaning independently of those pronoun choices.
