Bodo to Macedonian: prominence, distance and the start of an event are different choices
A prominent Bodo object does not automatically mean this one here
Bodo differential object marking can reflect definiteness, specificity, human reference and discourse prominence. Macedonian has a three-part article system described by Wahlström and Killian as proximal, neutral and distal. These target choices do not provide a three-way conversion table for Bodo case endings. A prominent source object can be someone already under discussion without being physically close to the speaker.
The researchers’ spoken-corpus analysis also finds the article forms differ substantially in frequency. A translation should not force a marked-looking Macedonian article simply to make an overt Bodo ending visible. Establish whether the source identifies an already known object, points to something nearby or contrasts a more distant referent. Discourse importance and physical distance are different reasons for drawing attention to an object.
This distinction is useful in a Bodo message about collecting a particular item. The target must retain which item is meant, but adding a near-speaker interpretation can misdirect the recipient if the item is elsewhere. Conversely, if the Bodo context actually points out an item, reducing everything to general definiteness can remove that pointing function. Interpret the reference before choosing the Macedonian noun phrase.
A beginning is not the same as an expectation of a beginning
Boro and Basumatary distinguish Bodo -zen, just starting, from -ha, about to. The first entails that the event begins, while the second does not necessarily entail that the event occurs. In a Macedonian account of an interrupted plan, a target wording meaning that the action already started would therefore add a factual claim absent from an anticipatory Bodo source.
Their example of people about to sit down for lunch is interrupted before that sitting takes place. In translating such a passage, keep the interruption attached to the right stage: preparation or imminence is different from an action underway. The article choice identifying the participants cannot repair a verb phrase that has advanced the event beyond the source. Participant reference and event stage both need to survive the translation.
Identity and a yes–no question have their own target signals
The UKIM beginner textbook illustrates Macedonian identity statements and questions with an overt copular element, and uses дали and ли in question patterns. These are useful target resources for a Bodo message asking someone to identify an object. A question about whether an item is a particular thing must remain a question, even if the Bodo source’s compact morphology has no separately aligned word for every Macedonian component.
The same textbook contrasts affirmative identification with negative identification, including a statement that something is not a pencil. Do not confuse a Bodo reference to a particular object with an assertion that its identity is confirmed. A marked source object can occur inside a question or denial. The Macedonian result must preserve that clause-level uncertainty or negation while selecting an appropriate article and noun phrase for the referent itself.
