Bodo to Lithuanian: whose father and whose own belongings?

An owner already inside the Bodo word must be recovered

Bodo kinship words can include the person to whom the relationship is anchored. Basumatary gives apha for my father and bipha for his or her father. Translating either as an unspecified father would discard information, even though the Bodo expression contains no separately written equivalent of an English possessive word.

Lithuanian distinguishes possessive forms such as mano and tavo from personal-pronoun forms used in other genitive functions. The reference grammar edited by Ambrazas illustrates mano laišką in a request to read my letter. The relevant form expresses the owner, rather than simply providing any case form associated with I.

For a Bodo source moving from my father to someone else’s father, preserve the change of anchor. A repeated Lithuanian kinship noun alone cannot show it. At the same time, the gender-neutral Bodo third person does not supply every distinction a target possessive may require; the surrounding source reference must establish which person owns or anchors the relationship.

Lithuanian own points back to the clause subject

A separate Lithuanian option, savo, refers to the subject of the sentence regardless of that subject’s person or number. The grammar illustrates this across I, you, he or she and plural subjects. It cannot be assigned permanently to one Bodo possessive simply because that source expression refers to the speaker in one example.

Pasakyk savo tėvams is the grammar’s instruction to tell one’s parents. The understood listener performs the telling, and savo connects the parents to that subject. In a Bodo request, an owner referring to the person who should act may therefore require different handling from an owner referring to the writer.

This difference is useful in family arrangements. A source asking the listener to contact the listener’s father and one asking them to contact the writer’s father involve the same action but different people. Treating every Bodo owner expression as Lithuanian own would collapse that distinction. Identify the clause’s actor before deciding whether the possession points back to them.

Respectful address cannot be inferred from possession

Bodo distinguishes ordinary and honorific second-person forms. Lithuanian likewise contrasts familiar tu with plural-form jūs used for respectful singular address as well as for groups. The intended owner of a possession does not independently establish which address form should be used when asking that person to act.

Ivanauskaitė and Hilbig’s research finds that Lithuanian address choices reflect interacting factors including social distance, relative power and age. Their study does not support treating every older addressee as automatically requiring one fixed form in every situation. The Bodo honorific choice provides relevant evidence about the intended tone, while the actual relationship still matters.

Consequently, a short Bodo instruction about an elder’s belongings can carry two independent dependencies: who owns the item, and how the listener is addressed. Lithuanian savo must track the subject when appropriate, while tu or jūs conveys a relationship with the addressee. Keeping those decisions separate prevents an apparently polite translation from assigning the belongings to the wrong person.
