Bodo to Northern Kurdish: rebuild possession around the clause’s actor

A Bodo owner suffix is not the complete Kurdish construction

Narzary’s Bodo pronoun paradigms identify possessive forms with -ni, including bini for a third-person owner without a male–female distinction. A source phrase carrying that form tells the translator about ownership, but does not by itself supply all the structure required in Northern Kurdish.

Thackston’s Kurmanji grammar illustrates possession with kitêba min, my book, and kitêbên min, my books. The possessed noun carries a linking form before the owner. A translation that simply attaches a Kurdish pronoun where Bodo has its genitive suffix can therefore miss the target noun’s construction. Determine the possessed item and its number as well as the person possessing it.

The actor’s own possession requires another decision

Thackston distinguishes an ordinary possessor from xwe referring back to the clause’s subject. His account explicitly applies this distinction to possessions as well as objects affected by an action. Thus the relevant question for a Bodo possessive is not only whose item it is, but whether that owner is also the participant acting in this clause.

Consider an original translation situation in which one woman says that another woman brought her book. The Bodo third-person possessive alone does not establish which woman owns it. Northern Kurdish needs the appropriate relation between the bringing participant and the owner; selecting self-reference because both participants are women would resolve the ambiguity incorrectly. The contrast concerns reference, not simply agreement with a female noun.

Keep the source reflexive and possessive analyses separate

Narzary discusses Bodo reflexives in constructions where subject and object identify the same entity. That source evidence is useful for recognizing genuine self-directed actions. However, a Bodo ordinary possessive and a Bodo reflexive object are not interchangeable labels for every instance of ownership.

The Kurmanji reflexive has a broader set of illustrated uses, including kitêba xwe for the actor’s own book. Accordingly, a target reflexive possession can be necessary even when the source phrase being translated is an owner expression rather than the object equivalent of oneself. Work from the relationship among the participants instead of expecting the two languages’ grammatical categories to have identical boundaries.

A description of several items must retain its plurality

Narzary also documents Bodo examples in which an adjective is repeated and the phrase receives a plural interpretation without a plural suffix on the noun. This creates another possible trap for a Kurdish possessive phrase: the visible Bodo noun ending alone may not establish that only one item is involved.

If the source describes several new possessions through that pattern, reconstruct the plural target noun phrase rather than repeating an adjective as a substitute for Kurdish noun marking. The source can encode number elsewhere in the expression while the target linking construction still needs to distinguish the possessed items. Owner reference, the actor’s identity, and the number of possessions must all survive the same translation, even when Bodo distributes those clues across different parts of its phrase.
