Bodo to Konkani: ownership endings must follow the target noun

A gender-neutral owner does not make a gender-free phrase

Bodo can refer to a third person with bi without choosing a male or female personal pronoun. Its possessive example bi-ni bizab identifies that person’s book. Translating the owner into Konkani requires attention to a different distinction: a possessive expression can change according to the noun it accompanies. The owner’s identity and the grammatical properties of the possession are separate decisions.

Peterson’s description of Goan Konkani explains that genitive markers agree with the following noun in gender, number and direct or oblique status. Bodo -ni should therefore not be replaced with one supposedly universal Konkani ending. In a Bodo message listing someone’s book, school and belongings, the same owner can require different target forms. A changing ending need not announce a change from one owner to another.

A relation word can require a different noun stem

Bodo examples distinguish a person called, a recipient and a companion through different case markers. For instance, nɯŋ-zɯŋ means with you in the cited question. These relations must remain distinct in Konkani even when a target construction also places relational material after a noun.

Goan Konkani has direct and oblique noun forms. Peterson illustrates the school noun as ʃaɭa in both direct singular and direct plural, but ʃaɭe in oblique singular and ʃaɭã in oblique plural. The unchanged direct form does not mean number is irrelevant everywhere. When a Bodo message changes from naming a school to describing a relation involving it, the Konkani construction can require a stem change as well as a relational marker.

The practical comparison is between whole noun phrases. Identify whether the source means a school, several schools, or a person associated with a school before treating two similar-looking Konkani forms as interchangeable. An oblique ending is not an extra object or another participant.

Human reference is not a reliable guide to noun gender

Bodo’s gender-neutral third-person pronoun does not supply the grammatical gender required by every Konkani noun. Goan Konkani distinguishes masculine, feminine and neuter, including among inanimate objects. Peterson also documents a neuter noun for girl. A biological-sex guess cannot reliably generate the agreement pattern.

This matters especially when Bodo bi resumes a relative already named. The translator must connect the pronoun to the correct person while separately constructing target agreement. Calling a noun neuter describes a grammatical class; it does not establish that its referent is an object. At the same time, Peterson records disagreement among speakers about some neuter agreement used for women. A grammatical possibility should not be presented as a universally welcomed form of address.

These observations concern the Goan variety described in the research, rather than an assertion that every Konkani community uses identical forms. Bodo’s owner, companion and recipient distinctions can all survive, but their target expression requires the selected variety’s noun and agreement patterns rather than a mechanical substitution of suffixes.
