Bodo to Latin-script Inuktitut: returning, departing and locating a place are separate meanings

A return should not disappear inside a generic movement verb

Boro and Basumatary describe a Bodo adverbial suffix whose usual repetition reading can become back with motion verbs. Their corpus examples include people returning after running from a village and a speaker going back to a hostel. In Latin-script Inuktitut, retaining only a basic root meaning depart would lose the return relationship. Identify whether the Bodo action repeats, restores an earlier state, or takes someone back to an earlier location.

The chapter explains that repetition can concern a resultant state rather than an identical action. This matters in a Bodo account of leaving a job again: the earlier loss of the job and the new departure need not have happened in the same way. A target translation should retain the repeated outcome without inventing a second identical sequence. A compact source suffix can contribute this distinction even when no separate source word corresponds to English again.

The endpoint of travel is different from the place already occupied

Tusaalanga’s basic-structure lesson distinguishes sijjami, at the shoreline, sijjamut, to the shoreline, and sijjamit, from the shoreline. For a Bodo route description, these differences help test whether the Inuktitut output preserves location, destination or origin. A return journey still has a direction: knowing that someone goes back does not tell the translator to replace the destination with a static at-location expression.

The Bodo chapter’s hostel example concerns going back to the hostel, while its village example describes people who had run from the village before returning. Those relations should remain distinct in the target. Inuktitut can encode the place relation inside the word, so the absence of a separate Latin word meaning to or from is not evidence that the relationship has vanished. Compare the whole target place form with the actual source path.

Person and time can be inside the same written target word

Tusaalanga illustrates aullaqtunga, I am departing, and aullaqtuq, he or she is departing. It also shows how a past affix enters between root and ending. A Bodo motion account therefore needs both the moving participant and time interpreted before a target word is assessed. Recognizing the departure root alone cannot show that the correct person is leaving or that the event belongs to the right time.

A Bodo suffix conveying return belongs to event meaning, whereas a target person ending identifies the participant. Do not let a repeated-looking syllable in the Latin result stand in for either distinction without checking its function. The source and target can both combine multiple pieces of information in a word, but that shared compactness does not make their internal segments align one for one.

Latin spelling remains Inuktitut spelling

Tusaalanga’s ICI roman orthography uses a, i and u, with doubled vowels marking length and doubled consonants recording a longer consonant. It distinguishes ordinary target vocabulary from borrowed names, where other letters may occur. A Bodo place name carried into the message is thus a different spelling problem from a translated Inuktitut motion word. Keep the name identifiable while preserving the target word’s own length distinctions; selecting Latin output does not turn it into an approximate pronunciation guide for Bodo readers.
