Bodo to Divehi: polite reference can require a different way of naming the listener

A plain you is not socially neutral in every target setting

Basumatary distinguishes ordinary and honorific Bodo second-person reference. A Divehi translation must preserve the relationship to the listener, but a plain dictionary equivalent of you may not be suitable. Gnanadesikan’s Dhivehi grammar describes kalē as generally avoided in polite modern standard Malé usage because it can sound accusatory.

This is a scoped description of the standard variety, not a judgement about every island’s speech. A respectful Bodo request should therefore not be made abruptly familiar simply by substituting kalē for the source addressee. Identify the intended relationship and choose an appropriate target address construction rather than rely on a pronoun gloss alone.

The speaker’s self-reference also has a register

The Dhivehi grammar distinguishes plain first-person aharen and ma in Malé usage from deferential aḷugaṇḍu. A Bodo message addressed respectfully to another person may thus require attention to how the speaker refers to themselves as well as how they address the listener.

This does not mean that every Bodo honorific pronoun automatically requires the most deferential Divehi self-reference. The target social situation must support the choice. A speaker politely requesting information from an equal and one addressing a higher-status individual can have different interpersonal relationships even when both source messages avoid familiarity. Preserve the source intention without escalating it into an unsupported degree of deference.

A kinship form can identify a relationship rather than an unrelated title

Basumatary illustrates Bodo ada and bida as my elder brother and his or her elder brother. The owner relationship must be recovered before a Divehi family expression is constructed. A source relative is not automatically the person being addressed merely because kinship terminology can also serve social address functions.

The Dhivehi grammar discusses the use of names and relationship expressions in place of direct pronouns. In a translated exchange about a family member, distinguish a term used to address the listener from a term describing somebody else’s relative. Otherwise a socially plausible target phrase can change the family relation central to the source message.

To me and with me express different participant roles

The Dhivehi grammar distinguishes dative and sociative first-person forms, including shortened stems in relevant constructions. Basumatary likewise documents separate Bodo recipient and accompaniment relations. These are not interchangeable ways of mentioning the speaker: one may receive something while another accompanies somebody.

In a Bodo request asking a respected listener to bring a relative along, track the speaker, the listener and the relative independently. The Divehi translation must preserve who is addressed, whose relative is involved and whether the speaker is a recipient or companion. Appropriate register cannot compensate for swapping those roles, and a correct family term cannot by itself establish the relationship expressed by the rest of the sentence.
