Bodo to Bosnian: an ungendered pronoun can still require a gendered target form

The source pronoun does not identify he rather than she

Basumatary’s Bodo study describes personal pronouns as lacking gender agreement and glosses third-person bi as he or she. A Bosnian translation should therefore recover the intended person from the wider account where a target construction distinguishes gender. The source pronoun alone does not justify choosing a male participant.

A Bodo narrative can discuss a woman and a man in neighbouring sentences using a third-person form. Track which individual each reference continues rather than make the first person mentioned the permanent target antecedent. The correct Bosnian form depends on the source referent, not on a default assumption about who usually performs the described activity.

The participle can reveal a distinction absent from bi

The Bosnian MULTEXT-East specifications distinguish masculine singular bio, feminine singular bila and neuter singular bilo as participial forms. A Bodo description translated through such a target construction can consequently require information that the source pronoun does not independently supply.

This is a grammatical selection, not permission to invent biographical information. If the wider Bodo passage identifies the participant, use that evidence. If it leaves the referent genuinely unspecified, do not pretend that an arbitrary gendered choice was explicitly encoded in the source. Consider wording that preserves the available information while remaining appropriate to the target sentence.

A brother’s gender does not identify the owner’s gender

Basumatary illustrates bida as his or her elder brother. The relative is male in the gloss, but the family anchor can be a woman or a man. A Bosnian translation must keep those two reference decisions separate rather than infer a male owner from the word brother.

In an event where somebody asks their elder brother for help, identify who asks and which brother is involved. The target gendered forms referring to the asker should follow the asker’s identity; those describing the brother follow the brother. A correct kinship noun can still be embedded in a sentence that wrongly changes the owner or actor if those decisions are collapsed.

Respect and number remain independent source information

The Bodo study distinguishes ordinary and honorific third-person forms and documents separate plural formations. Lack of source gender agreement does not mean that the passage lacks all reference detail. Preserve its count and social relationship while resolving any target gender requirement from the account.

The Bosnian specifications separately record singular and plural participial forms, including bili and bile. A group reference therefore needs both the source group recovered and the appropriate target agreement chosen. Do not let a respected singular Bodo person become a group, or let several people become one default male participant. The target sentence must retain the actual participants, the family links and the event roles alongside any grammatical gender distinctions that Bosnian requires.
