Bodo to Assamese: respectful possession can change more than the pronoun

Start with the relationship expressed in Bodo

Basumatary’s account of Bodo personal pronouns distinguishes ordinary and honorific forms in second and third person, with singular and plural treated separately. It also describes personal prefixes in kinship expressions. A source phrase can therefore identify both the person whose relative is mentioned and the social relationship conveyed by the pronoun.

When translating a family introduction, distinguish the person addressed from the relative being introduced. A phrase about your father concerns a second-person possessor and a third-person relative. Those roles should not be merged merely because both people are treated respectfully in the conversation. Track the possessor before selecting the Assamese kinship expression.

The direct comparison documents a specific difference

Bharadwaj’s fieldwork study compares Assamese from Sivasagar with Bodo from Kokrajhar. In its Bodo examples, changing the second-person possessor from neutral to formal leaves the personal prefix on the kinship noun unchanged. The Assamese examples instead distinguish neutral tomar deutara from formal aponar deutak. Both identify your father, but their internal forms differ.

The study notes that the personal affixes discussed are optional. Consequently, its examples establish a documented contrast, not permission to insert a suffix into every kinship expression mechanically. Use the intended address relationship and the actual target construction together rather than replacing only the independent pronoun and assuming the remaining phrase is already appropriate.

The same paper distinguishes neutral, informal and formal Assamese address. A two-way Bodo distinction should not be mapped to that system by counting labels. Determine the relationship in the actual exchange. A familiar family conversation and a formal introduction can concern the same relative while requiring different target choices.

Respect does not change who belongs to the family

The Bodo pronoun account provides separate first-, second- and third-person patterns for kinship reference. That participant distinction remains important when the target wording is revised for politeness. Changing a respectful form should not change my relative into your relative, or turn a reference to the addressee’s family into the sender’s family.

For a short introduction, make a working list containing speaker, addressee and relative. Attach each possessive expression to one of those roles. If the conversation is quoted or forwarded, record the original speaker too: the word corresponding to my belongs to a viewpoint, not permanently to the person forwarding the text.

After adjusting the Assamese address level, reread the whole kinship phrase rather than checking the pronoun alone. Then compare the family relationship against the Bodo source and inspect the next sentence for continued reference. This catches an error that ordinary word-by-word review can miss: a courteous target introduction whose internal morphology points to the wrong possessor. The cited comparison is limited to its stated varieties and constructions, so unfamiliar regional forms need their own evidence instead of being rejected solely because they differ from one elicited example.
