Bhojpuri to Zulu: a respectful greeting can concern one person

Plural wording need not count several listeners

UNISA’s Zulu greeting lesson explains that greeting an individual through a plural form can express respect or concern for that person’s family. The Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar likewise distinguishes respectful रउआ from familiar तू. A translation should therefore interpret the real addressee count rather than equate every respectful form with a group.

A source message to one older neighbour should not become a greeting to several unrelated people merely because the target uses a respectful plural pattern. Conversely, a source genuinely addressed to several visitors must retain its actual audience. The relationship and count are separate facts that the target greeting has to express together.

A relative label can be an address rather than a family claim

The Zulu lesson describes baba and mama as forms for addressing older men and women, alongside family-age expressions for other relationships. A Bhojpuri courtesy expression involving kinship language should therefore be interpreted for its social function before a literal family connection is asserted.

This matters when the source introduces a neighbour, teacher or visitor. Calling someone through an age-related respectful expression does not necessarily establish that they are the writer’s parent. The target must preserve whether the Bhojpuri phrase identifies an actual relative or addresses another person politely. A suitable social label should not silently rewrite the family relationships of the passage.

Leaving and staying select different farewells

UNISA distinguishes Hamba kahle, directed to someone going, from Sala kahle, directed to someone staying. A Bhojpuri farewell therefore requires the participants’ movements interpreted, rather than one universal goodbye substituted regardless of who leaves.

The source speaker may depart while the listener remains, or the listener may be the departing visitor. Those are different perspectives on the same parting. If a target farewell assigns departure to the wrong person, the social formula can conflict with the practical situation. Establish who moves and who remains before selecting the Zulu construction.

The narrator’s count remains independent of the audience

The Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri description records हम as singular I and हमनी as we. One narrator can greet a family, while several narrators can address one respected person. Neither the audience’s size nor respectful target wording determines how many people the source speaker represents.

This distinction becomes particularly useful in a message that greets, introduces and then says farewell. The writer may name one individual, ask after a family and describe an individual departure. Each part has its own participant relationship. Zulu can express respect and social connection through constructions that differ from source word spacing or dictionary glosses. Preserve the Bhojpuri speaker, actual addressee and leaving-versus-staying roles before choosing the formulas, so that the target greeting’s politeness supports the intended encounter instead of describing a different set of people.
