Bhojpuri to Tigrinya: identify the person before forming the question

A copular question can require gender information

Thakur records Bhojpuri copular forms such as बा and describes person and honorific distinctions across varieties. A Tigrinya identification question uses its own agreement system. Harvard’s ELIAS lesson contrasts ዲኻ for a masculine singular addressee with ዲኺ for a feminine singular addressee. These are different forms of the question “are you?” rather than different degrees of respect.

Bhojpuri respectful रउआ does not by itself establish whether the listener is male or female. A source question may consequently be clear about courtesy while leaving a target agreement choice unresolved. Treating an honorific form as evidence of masculine gender would add information the source did not provide.

A question does not have to reverse the words

The ELIAS lesson also teaches yes-or-no questions formed through interrogative intonation without changing the order of the words. An identification statement can therefore become a question while retaining its basic sequence. A Bhojpuri question should not automatically acquire English-style subject–verb inversion in its Tigrinya translation.

This is particularly relevant because Thakur describes a generally verb-final Bhojpuri structure with auxiliary material after the main predicate. The target question must be judged by its own construction, rather than by whether the copular expression has moved to the front. Question force and word order are related differently across languages.

Location and source are different questions

Harvard’s question list distinguishes ኣበይ, where, from ካበይ, where from. A Bhojpuri enquiry asking for someone’s origin or starting point should retain that source relation rather than ask only for a present location. Thakur records source uses of से, so that element can contribute important information even when the rest of the source enquiry is very short.

The same Bhojpuri postposition also has instrumental uses in Thakur’s description. It therefore cannot be replaced by one Tigrinya “from” expression in every sentence. First distinguish a place of origin from an instrument or means; the appropriate target question follows from that role rather than from the isolated spelling से.

A morning greeting refers to a different interval from an evening greeting

ELIAS separates general greetings from expressions associated with the morning, daytime, and evening. Its morning forms enquire about how the person has spent the night, while later forms concern a different part of the day. Translating a Bhojpuri greeting through its intended occasion can therefore be more accurate than substituting a single target phrase for every enquiry about well-being.

The lesson also varies the forms for gender and number. A message to one Bhojpuri recipient and a message to several people do not automatically use the same target ending. Thakur distinguishes honorific singular address from explicitly plural expressions such as रउआ लोग; preserving that distinction helps select the intended Tigrinya participants without confusing respect with a literal group.
