Bhojpuri to Samoan: count the owners separately from the things owned

One owner can have several things

The Peace Corps Samoan course distinguishes the number of possessors from the number of possessed items. Possessive expressions can change when the item is plural even though its owner stays the same. A target form that differs from the singular expression does not necessarily mean another owner has been added.

For a Bhojpuri message identifying a traveller’s belongings, keep “my bag” separate from “my bags.” The writer is one person in both cases; only the belongings change in number. If the source adds a second bag, the Samoan possessive expression may need revision as well as any quantity stated elsewhere.

Gopal Thakur Lohar’s Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar discusses possessive pronominal forms and separate plural-marking resources. Those source forms supply the intended ownership and quantity. They should not be treated as a word-for-word template for the Samoan phrase, where information may be distributed differently.

Several owners can share a single item

The Samoan course also treats possessives based on dual and plural personal pronouns. These distinguish the people associated with an item independently of how many items there are. Its discussion of inclusive and exclusive “we” adds another question: whether the person addressed belongs to the group.

Imagine two travellers sharing one suitcase. A reference to their suitcase should not become two suitcases merely because there are two owners. Conversely, one traveller with two suitcases should not become a two-person group. Separate these quantities before deciding whether a target form reflects the owners or the belongings.

If the writer tells a travelling companion about their shared suitcase, the listener belongs to the ownership group. If the same information is sent to a host who does not share it, the listener does not. Forwarding the message can therefore change the appropriate reference without changing either the suitcase or its owners.

Possessive class is another choice, not a gender label

The course presents corresponding a- and o-series possessives, including la‘u and lo‘u. Their distinction should not be interpreted as male versus female ownership. It belongs to the possessive relationship. The manual offers introductory noun-group guidance, but that is not a reason to reduce every possible relationship to a rigid personal-object rule.

For a practical message, identify what relationship the source asserts before choosing a target phrase. A bag belonging to the writer, an item temporarily carried for a friend, and an item assigned to a group need not make identical claims. Do not strengthen temporary responsibility into ownership just to produce a simpler possessive expression.

The Bhojpuri grammar also distinguishes a first-person singular ham in its regional examples from plural references. Avoid assuming a group merely because the form resembles a plural in another familiar language. The actual participants in the Bhojpuri message determine which ownership relationship must survive.

For a lost-property enquiry, state the owner or owners, the item, and the number of items clearly. Then translate the complete phrase after any change. Samoan can express those distinctions through its own possessive forms while keeping the enquiry about exactly the same people and belongings.
