Bhojpuri to Brazilian Portuguese: listener agreement, a gente and ongoing actions

A Bhojpuri addressee can take third-person Brazilian grammar

Bhojpuri verbal agreement can encode several honorific degrees in the Bara-Parsa variety described by Lohar. Brazilian Portuguese distributes listener reference through forms such as você, tu and respectful titles, with regional variation. Você refers to the listener but takes third-person singular verb forms. A source second-person meaning therefore does not require a target second-person-shaped ending in every sentence.

Mango’s Brazilian lesson gives Você está no Brasil?, are you in Brazil, and identifies o senhor and a senhora as respectful address options. A Bhojpuri honorific suffix should be interpreted for its social relationship before choosing among these constructions. Translating it as você everywhere could flatten a respectful distinction; treating every third-person Portuguese form as reference to somebody absent could misidentify the listener.

A plural group can use a singular-shaped predicate

Informal Brazilian Portuguese frequently uses a gente with the meaning we while taking third-person singular verbal agreement. Mango contrasts A gente trabalha junto with Nós trabalhamos juntos, both meaning we work together. A Bhojpuri plural reference can therefore receive either a plural or a singular-shaped target predicate depending on the chosen Brazilian construction.

The important distinction is between the number of people described and the grammatical agreement selected by a target expression. A gente does not reduce a Bhojpuri group to one person. Conversely, attaching a plural verb merely because the source denotes several people does not produce the standard agreement of this construction. Maintain one Brazilian expression consistently through the translated passage rather than alternating its agreement at random.

An ongoing activity needs Brazilian aspect wording

Bhojpuri uses रह raha in progressive constructions. Brazilian Portuguese commonly expresses an activity in progress through estar with a gerund, whereas European Portuguese frequently uses estar a with an infinitive. Selecting the Brazilian target should influence the predicate itself, not only the vocabulary around it.

A Bhojpuri progressive sentence should still be distinguished from a habitual statement or a report of completion. The Bhojpuri documentation separately records कर kara in a habitual construction and चुक cuka for finishing. A translator should not choose the Brazilian ongoing pattern solely because the source contains multiple verbal words; it is the interpreted event, rather than the presence of an auxiliary, that establishes progressive meaning.

The source copula does not choose between ser and estar

Lohar describes a present Bhojpuri copula bā and negative nʌikʰe. Portuguese requires choices among different predicate constructions, including ser and estar with adjectives. Pearson’s grammar chapter teaches their contrast rather than treating both as unrestricted equivalents of be. A single Bhojpuri copular form therefore cannot decide the target verb independently of the accompanying description.

The target noun also controls Portuguese gender agreement. Even if a Bhojpuri adjective bears masculine or feminine morphology, the Portuguese equivalent must agree with its own head noun and intended referent. Lohar’s discussion of reduced gender marking in eastern Bhojpuri makes the distinction particularly useful: the source may not display an ending that Portuguese still requires. Preserve the person or object described, then build the Brazilian adjective and predicate around that target reference.
