Bhojpuri to European Portuguese: direct address without you and precise activity readings

A respectful listener can be addressed without an explicit you

Bhojpuri identifies degrees of respect through its own pronouns and verbal agreement. Lohar describes three honorific levels in Bara-Parsa. European Portuguese cannot be mapped onto that system by assigning one written você to every respectful Bhojpuri reference. Practice Portuguese explains that speakers often use a name, title or omitted subject with the corresponding third-person verb instead.

A Portuguese question containing the listener’s name can therefore still be addressed directly to that person. It need not be a question about somebody absent. When translating a Bhojpuri exchange with a known listener, preserve that conversational role before deciding whether the target needs tu, a title or a name-based construction. Otherwise a courteous source question can become an unintended third-person report.

The change from familiar to respectful reaches the command

The European Portuguese teaching discussion contrasts desculpa with desculpe, familiar and more formal imperative forms. This provides a small but useful test for a Bhojpuri request: the interpersonal choice affects the predicate even if an address word is omitted. A polite noun at the beginning does not by itself make every following verb consistent.

Bhojpuri’s honorific endings carry information that an English intermediary often hides behind a single you. If a translation passes through an English gloss, recover the original relationship before selecting the Portuguese command. Conversely, do not inflate an intimate Bhojpuri request into ceremonious Portuguese merely because the source contains respectful kinship language; the target relationship has to be interpreted as a whole.

Progressive meaning becomes an infinitive construction

Bhojpuri documents progressive रह raha as part of a multi-word predicate. A common European Portuguese counterpart uses estar a followed by an infinitive, rather than the source’s final auxiliary order. Practice Portuguese gives Eu estou a estudar gramática, I am studying grammar. The auxiliary changes for the subject; a and the infinitive have their own fixed roles.

This should remain distinct from a habitual Bhojpuri statement. The source documentation identifies कर kara in a habitual construction, so the presence of several verbal pieces does not automatically mean an action is happening now. Likewise, European Portuguese andar a can describe activity over a broader recent period. Reading andar as literal walking would add movement absent from the source, just as reading every Bhojpuri light verb literally can add an unwanted action.

Descriptions need the Portuguese meaning, not just a be gloss

Bhojpuri bā can support descriptions that Portuguese expresses through different ser or estar constructions. Pearson’s chapter explicitly teaches their contrast with adjectives. A Bhojpuri state must therefore be interpreted before choosing the Portuguese verb; an English is inserted between source and target does not resolve the choice.

Vocabulary can also differ by Portuguese variety. Pearson identifies aborrecido in European Portuguese with bored, boring or upset readings, depending on construction and context. A Bhojpuri statement about being upset and one about finding something boring should consequently not be treated as interchangeable merely because the same target adjective may occur. Preserve who experiences the feeling and whether the description concerns the person or the thing causing it.
