Bhojpuri to Polish: titled address, prepositional pronouns and event order

Bhojpuri respectful agreement becomes Polish titled address

Bhojpuri can mark honorific distinctions in the verb, with three degrees described in Lohar’s Bara-Parsa grammar. Polish commonly expresses formal address through pan, pani and their plural counterparts with third-person verb forms. A Bhojpuri listener reference therefore should not automatically receive a Polish second-person ending simply because that person is being spoken to.

Swan’s grammar contrasts informal czytacie, you plural read, with pan or pani czyta in formal singular address. The listener’s identity and the chosen social relationship jointly determine the Polish construction. A respectful Bhojpuri request and a familiar request to several people can both involve non-singular-looking source agreement, yet require quite different Polish wording.

Pronouns change after a preposition

Lohar describes Bhojpuri case markers as postpositional, with attached forms in pronouns. Polish has a different distribution of pronoun forms, including forms specifically used after prepositions. Translating a source relationship requires choosing the whole Polish prepositional phrase rather than keeping one pronoun form constant throughout the sentence.

Swan illustrates bez niego, without him, and dla niej, for her. The initial n belongs to the appropriate target pronoun form in these constructions; it does not represent an extra participant. In a Bhojpuri message that first mentions someone directly and later refers to the same person after a relationship marker, the Polish forms can legitimately differ while preserving one referent.

Gender is visible in different parts of the two predicates

Bhojpuri agreement in the studied variety includes masculine and feminine gender, although Lohar notes reduced marking in eastern varieties. Polish additionally distinguishes neuter nouns and several masculine classes relevant to inflection. A source gender category cannot be transferred mechanically to a Polish headword selected for the same meaning.

Polish past forms overtly mark gender, while its ordinary present finite forms do not use the same gender contrast. This means a Bhojpuri narrative and a Bhojpuri present-time statement can require different kinds of information from the Polish translator. A source that leaves a person’s gender unclear may be straightforward in one Polish tense yet require an unresolved choice in another; adding a gender without evidence changes the reference.

Do not turn every Bhojpuri verbal component into a Polish action

Bhojpuri documentation identifies रह raha as progressive, चुक cuka as finishing and जा jā in passive constructions. Polish organizes aspect primarily through imperfective and perfective verb choices and uses its own auxiliary and participial constructions for passives. The source components provide clues to the event, not a word-count pattern for the target predicate.

Polish also distinguishes adverbial participles describing a concurrent activity from those describing an earlier completed one: robiąc means while doing, whereas zrobiwszy means having done. When Bhojpuri combines a non-finite subordinate action with a main event, this ordering matters. A simultaneous action should not become an earlier accomplishment, and a completed prerequisite should not be presented as continuing alongside the main event merely because both are compressed into one source sentence.
