Bhojpuri to Lower Sorbian: two people require a target number decision

Read the source speaker count before choosing a target group

Thakur Lohar’s Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar distinguishes singular हम from plural forms including हमनी. Lower Sorbian also requires an additional number decision because its dual category remains active, as the DOBES documentation project explains. A Bhojpuri group statement therefore needs interpretation as two people or a larger group before the target construction is chosen.

This is useful in a Bhojpuri message about the writer and one companion. A generic plural translation may preserve the broad idea of we while missing the target’s grammatical treatment of a pair. Conversely, a writer representing a larger household should not be reduced to two people simply because one relative is named in the sentence. Source speaker number and target dual selection are related but distinct steps.

A possession phrase needs its own inflectional analysis

The Bhojpuri grammar lists हमार in its first-person possessive paradigm. Lower Sorbian teaching objectives explicitly include possessive forms such as mój and twój within nominal case and number contexts. The target cannot therefore be assembled by placing one invariant possessive equivalent beside every noun regardless of its grammatical environment.

For a Bhojpuri enquiry about my documents and your documents, identify the owner separately from the number and role of the documents. A case change in the Lower Sorbian phrase need not indicate a different owner; it can reflect how the same belongings participate in the clause. Conversely, a familiar-looking possessive root does not excuse agreement that fails to fit the target noun phrase.

A movement construction may need more than an ordinary infinitive

The DOBES description identifies the Lower Sorbian supine as a special nonfinite form normally used after movement verbs. A Bhojpuri phrase about going to perform an action should therefore be reconstructed as a target construction, rather than translated with an infinitive chosen only because a dictionary lists it as the action’s citation form.

Distinguish movement for a purpose from an unrelated statement that somebody performs the action. A message about going to collect an item contains a relationship between the motion and its purpose, not merely two adjacent verbs. The target must preserve that relationship through the appropriate Lower Sorbian construction. The source’s postpositions and verbal material should be interpreted functionally before their target counterparts are arranged.

Do not treat German contact as a substitution strategy

The documentation project notes German loanwords and code-switching in Lower Sorbian speech, including adaptation of borrowed items to Lower Sorbian inflection. That observation does not make a German sentence an adequate target for a Bhojpuri-to-Lower-Sorbian request. The intended language still needs its own lexical and grammatical forms.

When checking a translated Bhojpuri plan, identify whether the output actually maintains Lower Sorbian group number, possession and movement-purpose grammar. Recognizable German material cannot settle those questions. The source evidence is specifically Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri, while the target evidence comes from Lower Sorbian documentation and learning objectives; neither permits replacing an unfamiliar construction with assumptions from Hindi, Upper Sorbian or German.
