Bhojpuri to Khmer: keeping a confirmation question distinct from a statement

A spoken rise in pitch can disappear in a written message

Gopal Thakur Lohar’s Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar describes polar questions formed with raised intonation on the questioned material. A speaker can therefore ask for confirmation without radically rebuilding a declarative clause. In text, however, the recipient does not hear that pitch. Preserve the question’s function explicitly rather than relying on the source wording alone to reveal it.

The Northern Illinois University Khmer lesson describes both intonation and question particles. Its teaching examples use final ទេ in yes-or-no questions and introduce តើ at the beginning of formal questions. These elements should be read as part of a question construction, not automatically interpreted as an extra negative assertion.

For a Bhojpuri appointment message, distinguish “the visitor is coming tomorrow” from “is the visitor coming tomorrow?” The first conveys information; the second requests confirmation. A translation that preserves the visitor and date but turns the question into a statement can leave the writer waiting for an answer the reader never knew was needed.

A polite acknowledgement is not always the full answer

The Khmer lesson explains that response particles can acknowledge either a statement or a question. Following a question, a response particle used alone can imply affirmation; in a longer exchange, its function must be interpreted with the rest of the reply. It is unsafe to treat every occurrence as a standalone confirmation of all preceding details.

This matters if an appointment reply acknowledges the message and then changes the time. The courteous opening does not cancel the correction that follows. Preserve the actual reply as a whole: the recipient may accept the visit while rejecting the proposed hour, or may simply acknowledge receipt before explaining that attendance remains uncertain.

The lesson distinguishes បាទ and ចាស as response forms associated with male and female speakers in its account. That distinction concerns the person replying, not a rule to select the form from the visitor’s gender. Keep the writer of the reply separate from the third person discussed in the appointment message.

An alternative question asks the reader to choose

The Bhojpuri grammar separately describes alternative questions, where options can be juxtaposed or connected with an alternative marker. A request to choose between morning and afternoon is not the same as asking whether a morning appointment is possible. The desired response differs even if the message contains the same time words.

For a booking enquiry, state the alternatives clearly in the Bhojpuri source. If the writer wants the recipient to choose one time, preserve both options. If the writer only wants a yes-or-no answer about one time, do not add a second option just to make the target question seem more complete.

When revising a short message, check what answer would satisfy it: confirmation, a chosen alternative, or missing information such as the arrival time. This is especially useful when the original question depended on spoken intonation. Khmer can express the intended question through its own constructions while preserving who should answer, what they should confirm, and which details remain open.
