Bhojpuri to Japanese: make the description identify the right person or thing

A whole event can describe a book

Bhojpuri material describing an object through an earlier event needs more than equivalent nouns in Japanese. The Japan Foundation’s Marugoto materials give Senshuu watashi ga katta hon as an example involving the book I bought last week. The buying event identifies which book is meant; it is not a separate assertion that can be moved anywhere without changing the information structure.

When a Bhojpuri message distinguishes a purchased book from a borrowed one, the target must preserve that identifying relationship. A sequence that merely announces the purchase and then mentions a book can leave the reader uncertain whether both refer to the same item. Before building the Japanese noun phrase, identify what the source description modifies and which participant performed the embedded action.

A feature and an ongoing action describe differently

Marugoto contrasts descriptive patterns illustrated by Kami ga nagai hito, a person with long hair, and Uta o utatte iru hito, a person singing. These short romanized examples show two different routes to identifying someone. A Bhojpuri description of a lasting visible feature should not be rebuilt automatically as an action currently underway.

The distinction is useful in a source message asking the reader to find someone. The person’s hair and the person’s current singing may both be identifying clues, but only the latter depends on an ongoing activity. The target construction should retain what makes the Bhojpuri referent recognizable, rather than substituting a broad character label such as singer for an action happening at that moment.

An ongoing source predicate is not merely a person label

The Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar describes progressive constructions involving an aspect form and a copula. A Japanese translation must determine whether this activity is the main report or a description embedded within a larger reference to someone. The same source action can play either role depending on the sentence around it.

For instance, a message reporting what a person is doing and one directing attention to the person doing it have different purposes. Keeping the action word while losing that distinction changes how the Japanese reader is supposed to use the information. Clause boundaries and the noun being identified matter alongside the progressive meaning of the Bhojpuri predicate.

The embedded speaker may be one person

In the regional Bhojpuri source grammar, हम can mean singular I; हमनी identifies plural we. This matters inside a description of something bought, written or brought by the speaker. A target interpretation involving a group can assign the identifying event to different participants even if the object itself remains correctly named.

Japanese descriptive clauses should consequently be built from the interpreted Bhojpuri event, not from an English gloss that has already mistaken the speaker’s number. Determine who acted, what the description singles out and whether the activity is ongoing or completed. Those decisions keep a long Japanese noun phrase connected to the intended source referent instead of producing a grammatically plausible description of a different person or object.
