Bhojpuri to Icelandic: changing the verb can also change the person’s case

Similar actions do not always select the same target noun form

Bhojpuri pronouns occur with case forms and postpositions in Thakur Lohar’s description. Icelandic likewise marks case, but the target construction is not selected by matching a source marker to one invariant ending. Rögnvaldsson’s study contrasts hjálpa and aðstoða, both involving helping or assisting, with different object cases.

For a Bhojpuri request for help, choosing an Icelandic synonym can therefore require rechecking the recipient or affected person’s form. Retaining the old case merely because the two target verbs have similar meanings can leave the revised sentence grammatically wrong. The unit to translate is the predicate with its participant pattern, not an isolated action word followed by a reusable noun form.

With can describe a different participant relationship

The study contrasts Hann kom með mig with Hann kom með mér, distinguishing bringing the speaker along from accompanying the speaker. The visible preposition remains the same while the following case contributes to the event relationship. A Bhojpuri travel description needs that relationship interpreted before its Icelandic phrase is chosen.

Ask whether the source reports someone accompanying a traveller or bringing that person as part of their own journey. The same people and destination can occur in both events. A target that names them correctly can still change their involvement through a small inflectional choice. Source postpositional wording is evidence for the relationship, not permission to ignore the target verb and preposition together.

An experiencer need not look like a simple nominative actor

Icelandic grammatical descriptions recognize oblique subjects in certain constructions. A Bhojpuri statement about a need, feeling or perception must therefore be rebuilt through the selected target predicate rather than forced into a nominative pronoun simply because English would gloss it with I.

This is especially useful when a Bhojpuri narrative moves between deliberate actions and experiences. The same person remains involved, but the target grammar can assign different forms. Preserve that continuity without normalizing every case form to the citation pronoun. Conversely, an oblique form must be justified by the actual Icelandic construction, not chosen freely because the source person is emotionally affected.

The original speaker’s number still comes first

Thakur Lohar’s Bara-Parsa paradigm lists हम as singular and हमनी among plural forms. An Icelandic translation must establish that count before selecting person and number agreement. Reading the source through Hindi can change one speaker into a group, after which even correct Icelandic case choices describe the wrong participants.

For this direction, the source reference and target case system require separate attention. Establish who speaks and who is affected; then examine the Icelandic verb, any preposition and the case of each associated phrase. Similar meanings such as helping and assisting, or accompanying and bringing along, demonstrate why close vocabulary alone cannot guarantee the same event or a correct target construction.
