Bhojpuri to Filipino: ang does not always identify the person acting

Read the verb and its phrase markers together

In Filipino, the participant marked by ang is not necessarily the person performing the action. The verb’s voice or focus affixes help identify that participant’s role. A translation can organize the sentence around an affected object while still naming the actor elsewhere. Reading ang as a permanent label for the actor can reverse who did what.

The University of Hawaiʻi lesson illustrates Isulat mo ang kuwento, an instruction to write the story. The story is the ang-marked expression; mo identifies the person instructed to write. The example is useful precisely because the highlighted grammatical participant is an object of the action, rather than its human originator.

For a Bhojpuri instruction about preparing a document, keep the writer and the document distinct. If the Filipino result makes the document the ang-marked participant, that does not mean the document is doing the writing. Check the verb construction before deciding that the translation assigned the task to the wrong participant.

A change of voice does not necessarily remove the actor

Gopal Thakur Lohar’s Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar describes grammatical relations and passive constructions within that variety. Filipino’s voice system should not be reduced to an exact copy of the source active–passive distinction. The Tagalog grammatical overview explains that a patient-focused construction can retain the actor as a core participant.

This matters when a message names both a person responsible and an item affected. A Bhojpuri report about a colleague preparing the document should not lose the colleague merely because the target uses an object-oriented construction. Conversely, a source report that leaves the preparer unknown does not authorize inventing a person to fill an expected position.

The Hawaiʻi lesson also describes constructions organized around a beneficiary, location, or instrument. Its “focus” terminology concerns grammatical role, not simply whichever word a reader should stress. An ang-marked person can therefore be a beneficiary rather than the actor. Identify the person benefiting from the task separately from the person carrying it out.

Changing the requested task can change the whole construction

Imagine a source exchange asking one colleague to write a document for another colleague. Later, the request changes to asking the second colleague to write it for the first. The same two names and document appear, but responsibility and benefit have exchanged places. Keeping the old verb form and merely swapping a nearby name can misrepresent the new request.

The Bara-Parsa study describes postpositional case marking and special pronominal forms. Those source expressions provide relationships to preserve; they are not a ready-made list of Filipino markers. In the target, the verb and accompanying noun or pronoun expressions must work together to identify the participants.

For a revised document request, state who should write, what they should write, and who needs the result in the Bhojpuri source. Translate that complete request rather than replacing a single word in the previous output. This preserves the action and its participants while allowing Filipino to choose the appropriate voice construction. It also prevents a visible ang phrase from being mistaken for proof that the person named there must perform the task.
