Bhojpuri to Divehi: the speaker’s courteous form is a new decision

Bhojpuri singular hum must remain one speaker

Thakur Lohar’s grammar of Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri lists हम as singular and हमनी among plural first-person forms. The Abdulla-O’Shea Divehi dictionary separately lists aharen for I and aharumen for we. The source must therefore be interpreted as Bhojpuri before its participant count is transferred to Divehi.

This is consequential in an individual application or enquiry. Reading हम through Hindi expectations can make one person appear to represent a group. Conversely, a message explicitly speaking for a household needs a plural target even if one writer sends it. Establish the actual source speaker reference instead of allowing similarity to another language’s pronouns to determine the Divehi message.

Divehi also distinguishes the form of a courteous first person

The dictionary lists alhugan’du as a polite first-person expression alongside its ordinary I entries. Bhojpuri source respect is not therefore exhausted by choosing an expression for the reader. The Divehi speaker’s self-reference can also require an interpersonal decision that the isolated source हम does not settle.

The Bhojpuri grammar’s first-person agreement discussion does not establish an automatic word-for-word match to the Divehi polite first person. Consider the whole exchange: who writes, who receives it and what relationship the source enacts. A target can retain singular number and still introduce a different level of self-presentation if its first-person expression is selected solely from a dictionary list.

A reply word can participate in the courtesy level

The Divehi dictionary distinguishes labba as polite yes and aadhe as very polite yes. A Bhojpuri affirmative answer should therefore preserve the source’s interpersonal function as well as its positive polarity. Choosing the most deferential available word in every case can change an ordinary familiar exchange.

For a Bhojpuri conversation that moves from a greeting to a confirmation, check whether the target reply continues the same relationship. A carefully selected first-person pronoun followed by a discordant reply word can create a mixed interaction. Conversely, a courteous affirmative should not be reduced to a bare dictionary answer merely because the source contains only a short response. The social meaning can be concentrated in that one target word.

Possession must remain attached to the intended participant

The dictionary lists aharenge as my and aharumenge as our. Bhojpuri likewise has a possessive paradigm, including हमार for first-person singular in the cited study. Distinguish the owner from the item count before constructing a Divehi phrase about the writer’s documents or belongings.

In a Bhojpuri message containing both my request and our family, the target needs two different ownership references even though the same writer produces the text. Singular self-reference, polite self-presentation and plural ownership are separate grammatical or interpersonal choices. The evidence here is limited to attested dictionary forms and the regional Bhojpuri description; it does not justify assembling complete Divehi sentences by concatenating entries. It does identify precisely which meanings must survive when the target wording is built.
