Bhojpuri to Croatian: singular speakers, respectful listeners, and past agreement

One Bhojpuri speaker remains one Croatian speaker

Thakur records singular हम in Bhojpuri, with हमनी among the plural alternatives. Croatian first-person translation must therefore distinguish ja from mi according to the intended speaker count, rather than reading हम through standard Hindi. A Bhojpuri statement by one person should not become a statement by a group simply because its opening pronoun resembles another language’s plural.

The Croatian school grammar describes the perfect as a form of biti combined with an active verbal adjective. That adjective introduces gender and number agreement. In the short illustrations Čitao sam and Čitala sam, both speakers say that they read, but the first form is masculine singular and the second feminine singular. Bhojpuri first-person forms in Thakur’s account do not directly supply that gender distinction.

A respectful listener requires a different agreement decision

Thakur distinguishes respectful Bhojpuri रउआ from lower-honorific second-person forms. Croatian can address one person respectfully with Vi, but the Institute’s syntax guidance requires plural masculine predicate agreement for this construction whether the person addressed is male or female. Respectful singular reference therefore does not license a singular feminine predicate for a woman.

Vi ste čitali illustrates the plural agreement of a respectful reading statement. It should not be corrected to singular simply because only one recipient will receive the message. This is a different problem from the first-person Čitala sam: there, an ordinary singular speaker controls feminine singular agreement; here, the respectful address construction determines the target pattern.

Capitalization distinguishes an individual salutation from an audience

The Croatian orthography guide capitalizes second-person personal and possessive pronouns when expressing respect to a specific individual in writing. It uses lowercase forms for a group or when no particular individual is being addressed. Bhojpuri Devanagari provides no matching uppercase distinction, so the source cannot communicate this through letter case.

A Bhojpuri respectful request sent personally to one recipient and the same wording placed on a public notice can consequently require different Croatian capitalization. The distinction concerns the written addressee, rather than whether the translator considers one audience more deserving of courtesy. Both can be polite while following different capitalization conventions.

A final source auxiliary does not fix the Croatian auxiliary’s position

Bhojpuri commonly places its auxiliary after the main verbal material. Croatian unstressed auxiliaries are clitics whose placement follows Croatian sentence structure. The Institute explains their tendency toward the position after the first stressed constituent, with additional rules for subjects containing attributes, appositions, or full names. Copying source order word by word does not establish an acceptable target position.

For a compact first-person statement, Čitao sam naturally places the auxiliary after the participle. With an explicit pronoun, Ja sam čitao shows a different surface arrangement. These are two ways of constructing a Croatian statement about the same masculine singular reader, not different translations of the Bhojpuri auxiliary’s meaning. Person and gender interpretation determine the forms; Croatian clitic placement determines their arrangement.
