Bhojpuri to Bosnian: postpositions, noun cases and respectful address need a new balance

A Bhojpuri postposition is not a Bosnian noun ending

Gopal Thakur Lohar’s field-based grammar describes Bhojpuri case markers as postpositional, with forms attached to pronouns. Bosnian marks many corresponding relationships through noun and adjective case forms. A source phrase identifying a recipient or an affected participant should therefore be interpreted as a unit before selecting its Bosnian wording.

Columbia’s teaching table illustrates dobar profesor, a good professor, dobri profesori as a plural subject phrase and dobre profesore as a plural object phrase. The changing adjective and noun show why a Bhojpuri plural meaning cannot be translated simply by selecting one Bosnian plural headword. The participant’s role determines the complete phrase.

This is especially relevant when Bhojpuri places the object before the verb, its regular order in the variety described by the dissertation. Bosnian may arrange the same event differently. A change in position should not change who acts and who receives the action; case forms help make that relationship explicit in the target.

Honorific information may be carried by the source verb

The Bhojpuri dissertation describes three degrees of honorificity, including morphological marking on finite verbs in the studied variety. A short source clause can consequently express respect without a long title. Before translating it into Bosnian, determine whom that respectful marking concerns and whether the message addresses the person or talks about them.

Research on Bhojpuri vocative interjections further links address choices with age, kinship, status and other social variables. Treat an opening address as part of the interaction. A family term or interjection may establish a respectful or familiar relationship rather than add another person to the event.

The Bosnian result should preserve that relationship through its own address construction. A mechanically plural interpretation of an honorific source form can turn one respected addressee into a group. Conversely, reducing everything to an unmarked singular can erase the politeness conveyed by the original verb and address together.

Gender has to be established in the target phrase

Bhojpuri descriptions vary across regions: the dissertation explicitly notes reduced gender marking in eastern varieties. A source ending that does not identify gender is therefore not evidence that the target noun must take a default masculine form. Bosnian agreement follows the chosen Bosnian noun and the participant it refers to.

Columbia highlights noć, night, as a feminine noun despite its consonant ending. For Bhojpuri input describing nights, a target adjective cannot be selected by the final letter alone. Learn the noun’s grammatical category alongside its meaning, then apply the required number and case agreement.

Keep Bosnian choices consistent across the paragraph

Columbia presents Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian together but marks vocabulary particular to each written standard. Their extensive common grammar does not make every neighbouring form the intended Bosnian choice. Translating a Bhojpuri paragraph should produce a consistent target variety, not a mixture assembled from whichever familiar dictionary form appears first.

The source variety also matters. The Bhojpuri grammar cited here describes Bara-Parsa speech rather than every regional system. Use its structural insights without correcting a legitimate Bhojpuri form into Hindi or assuming that one documented honorific paradigm covers all speakers.
