Bhojpuri to Assamese: honorific systems resemble each other without matching slot for slot

Interpret the source relationship before choosing an Assamese pronoun

Thakur Lohar’s Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri grammar distinguishes familiar and respectful forms, including तू and रउआ. Bharadwaj’s Assamese field study instead organizes its second-person data as neutral, informal and formal, with examples transcribed tumi, tɔi and apuni. Similar labels do not establish a mechanical one-to-one mapping between the two systems.

For a Bhojpuri conversation with a relative or customer, identify the actual relationship and tone before accepting the Assamese form. A source familiar form need not imply hostility, and a source respectful form does not automatically call for the most elevated target expression in every context. The translation must enact the same interaction rather than align two independently described pronoun tables by position.

An unchanged Assamese verb may still address a different number

Bharadwaj’s data show the same honorific imperative agreement with singular and corresponding plural Assamese pronouns. Thus the verb form alone does not distinguish how many people are being addressed. The Bhojpuri source participant count needs to survive through the target pronoun and wider construction, not be inferred from the presence of one particular Assamese ending.

This matters when a Bhojpuri request addresses one person respectfully while mentioning that person’s family. The number of people discussed is different from the number of people asked to act. A target can choose an appropriate Assamese respect level yet accidentally address the whole family if singular and plural reference are not checked separately.

A family possessive phrase can carry the respect distinction internally

The Bhojpuri grammar lists familiar possessive forms such as तोहार and respectful राउर. Assamese kinship possession can also encode interpersonal distinctions, but through its own construction. Bharadwaj illustrates tomar deutara and aponar deutak for differently addressed references to the listener’s father.

For a Bhojpuri enquiry about the reader’s father, replacing only an Assamese subject pronoun may therefore leave the kinship expression at a different level. Identify the owner of the relationship and inspect the target possessive phrase itself. The father being discussed and the person addressed are different participants; respectful reference to one should not be confused with courtesy directed toward the other.

Counting people introduces another Assamese choice

Bharadwaj’s study also documents honorific distinctions among human classifiers. A Bhojpuri phrase naming several people therefore may need a target counting construction that does more than retain the numeral and noun. The quantity and the way those people are referred to must both fit the Assamese expression.

The evidence is regionally defined on both sides: Thakur Lohar’s source description concerns Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri, and Bharadwaj’s Assamese examples come from Sivasagar-based standard data. Within those scopes, the useful comparison is specific. Interpret source address and ownership, preserve the actual count, and construct Assamese pronouns, kinship possession and human counting according to their own patterns. Shared Indo-Aryan background does not make the honorific morphology interchangeable.
