Belarusian to Xhosa: a place form does not always specify the direction

The verb may carry a distinction Belarusian marks in a phrase

Belarusian combines prepositions and case forms to distinguish many spatial relationships. An accusative after a directional preposition can identify a destination rather than a direct object. Xhosa locative expressions distribute the information differently: the same place form can combine with different verbs to express coming from, going to, or arriving at a place.

The SADiLaR grammar contrasts Uvele ehlathini, he came from the forest, with Uye ehlathini, he went to the forest. Ehlathini remains the place expression while the verbs establish different motion relationships. Translating the Belarusian relational phrase separately from its motion verb can therefore lose the intended direction.

Do not turn a destination into an affected object

Belarusian accusatives have several functions. Alongside ordinary direct objects, they appear in certain motion constructions and can express duration. Before choosing a Xhosa construction, determine which job the source form performs. A destination should not become an item that somebody acted on merely because its Belarusian ending resembles an object ending.

In a delivery message, distinguish the person moving, the package being moved, and the destination. A sentence about carrying a parcel to a building has an affected item and a spatial goal. They are not interchangeable participants. A target sentence containing both correct noun translations can still be wrong if it assigns the building the parcel’s role.

The same check applies when the Belarusian writer foregrounds a place at the start of the sentence. Its early position does not automatically make it the actor. Use the source preposition, case, and verb together to understand the route before rebuilding the Xhosa clause.

Preserve departure, destination, and arrival separately

A Belarusian route description may give an origin, a destination, and an intermediate point. Do not assume that a single Xhosa locative form independently states which of those it represents. Check the selected verb and any additional spatial expression. A person leaving a place and a person arriving there can mention the same location while reporting opposite stages of the journey.

This is particularly useful when translating status updates. Already at the destination, still travelling towards it, and coming from it are different facts for somebody waiting to collect an item. A fluent place phrase cannot compensate for selecting the wrong motion relationship.

Belarusian past morphology also records gender and number without independently establishing grammatical person. If a short update omits its pronoun, identify whether the mover is the speaker, recipient, or someone else before completing the Xhosa verb. The route and the traveller are separate pieces of information.

For this direction, a practical review follows the journey in order: who moves, what is transported if anything, where the movement starts, and where it ends. Then read the Xhosa verb with its locative expressions as a complete unit. That preserves the Belarusian spatial distinctions even when they do not appear in corresponding small words or endings.
